Wonder if it was topped at some point in its life?

I noticed one in my town that was quite large and had 4 or 5 trunks like the one posted.

and it had a full center trunk too.

I can see a robust, fast-growing tree like P. Abies, growing on a well fertilized lawn and left unattended, could have lower branches grow out and then up, developing crowns of their own.

I'm speculating of course but the idea seems plausible.

After seeing a couple of seasons on mine, I'm already wondering what type of monster I may have planted.

The spruce in the pic still seems to have a central leader, tho it's got alot of competition. White pines can get "weeviled" yearly at a young age and end up w/many trunks -- seems like it's real common around here in fact. I have seen Norway spruces get their tops killed early on, but not as often. So that might be a cause. My southwestern white pine has had its top killed several times, but has successfully re-established a single leader so far.

Here's a beat-up old white pine hanging on near Temple, New Hampshire. They appear to have rather short lifespans unless they have good protection, such as in a deep ravine or closely surrounded by equal-height trees.
