Structural question

I want to remove this structural wall circled in green to open up my floorplan. I am also adding a new front entry and wall as well as a media room directly above the kitchen. What size beam do I need where the wall was? Would it also need posts?

    You have not provided enough information to get any meaningful answers.

    It would probably behoove you to talk to a builder or architect.

    David Schwinghamer, how long is that run of cabinetry on the left side of the kitchen? If the wall you're removing is 24', then that cab wall must be about the same length.

    That's too long. You need a better kitchen design.

    The answer is yes, you can remove the wall. BUT: The path to that yes answer however will surely expand your budget. The load of the house upstairs needs to be carried by the new beam then down to the foundation or ground. You may need a steel beam or engineered beam(s) to span the width you want. Your current wall support at the ends, may not be sufficient. So, to go back to the first post you have received, get a structural engineer involved as it looks like you are spending some serious money up and downstairs and all around with rooms being reshaped, new entry, media and theatre and an open floor plan. You surely don't want it to collapse.

    David Schwinghamer no one is going to guess what size beams you need on a discussions. The beams load has to be carried to the foundation. If you have the builders plans this would help you greatly. A structural engineer will have to come on site to make sure the loads are being carried the correct way.

    David, David here...and yes..you need posts to send the loads all the way to solid ground....through foundation. About beam sizes, there is not a single contractor (I hope) that works these forums that will stick his head in that particular noose. Structural engineers and architects get paid to size beams and design load paths....and they pay liability insurance to do so. They receive money for that assumption of liability. I post for free on Houzz to help with dilemmas...problems that don't seem to have simple answers. Yours is a simple question with a simple answer. Hire a professional to tell you what is required to keep your house from ending up in the basement.

    Thank you all for your answers, yes I know what it takes to get this done properly and will certainly do it. My house is on the side of a mountain so the foundation is solid rock. I was just testing to see to what extent Houzz people could help a person.

    As a residential designer I always recommend that my clients obtain the services of a structural engineer when dealing with situations such as yours. An engineer will track the loads from the roof down to the footings while companies that sell beams and girders are generally only concerned with the size of the member they are selling. Hire an engineer! The money you spend is well worth it.
