Stone fireplace update

What is the best way to do a DIY update to my stone fireplace? I know I can lime wash but these stones are so jagged that I don't know that limewash itself would produce a desirable look Ideally I would remove the stones but I know that should be done professionally

A stone chisel and 3lb sledgehammer is what I'd use. Starting at the top. Cover the surrounding areas with fabric drop clothes. Work on the grout lines.

You could limewash the stone veneer or you could remove it all in a couple of hours. There are many videos on YouTube that demonstrate how to removed these concrete stone boulders.
