Design mistake with new floors kitchen does not look good

last month

Previously we had very dark floors and I choose my kitchen colors accordingly now with new floors I feel I made a design mistake and everything near the kitchen feels wrong .. the lighting could be a factor and it can be improved but overall I feel since we did not plan the whole thing together and we went one renovation at a time it became a design mistake ..kindly help by sharing opinions

Well it looks like you need to finish settling in. Stools? Art on the walls, etc? What do you specifically think is ‘wrong’? I see a blank canvas that needs a bit of life that’s all.

Thanks so much for your reply .. we built the home during COVID and we ended up getting all quality issues and lack of options at builder design center due to which we wanted to renovate the great room at least but when we started we did not have visibility if we can do everything in that space we started off with kitchen and did not plan what should be our floors did not have anyone to guide us and later after 3 years picked new floors but could not visualize how the new floors and kitchen would look together initially we had dark dark floors and creamy white kitchen helped immediately and the flooring the batch I got is lighter than how it is in the sample box purchased I feel kitchen and flooring together somehow did not work well and I should have that foresight to select kitchen colors keeping in mind future flooring

  • last month

The flooring is supposed to be taupe tones blend of gray and oak but I think the batch we got is lighter or the lighting is making it look that way

You are right we just started moving back in yet to decorate the walls and fill the kitchen stuff ..will be doing over the weekend

Previously we had dark floors and the simply white kitchen looked creamy and good now with new floors it feels like a design mistake ..very cold and the colors looks white white not the countertop too adds to the sterile look

"I see a blank canvas that needs a bit of life that’s all."

Agree. And that "life" means COLOR. Right now nothing is objectionable, but it's blah.

I'd suggest a softly colored backsplash. I wouldn't go too saturated of a color, since the floor is a light, soft tone. A pale blue or green would jazz things up. If you choose a colored splash, you might consider painting the island, and you can build decor around the color you choose for the splash regardless.

Maybe add some matchstick blinds to your windows and drapes.

@chispa my flooring is engineered hardwood and my countertops are quartz we made custom kitchen and the countertops are from silestone and expensive to now change again so may be some decorative objects and adding life may help the situation

  • last month

@chispa when we did kitchen rebuild we had dark floors and instantly the simply white color brought in desired look but when I selected floors now the real homes with the same flooring were slightly deeper in color and my batch of flooring was lighter

  • last month

What is the backsplash? The same quartz as your counters?

  • last month

@porkchop_z5b_MI yes since we did remodel based on the old floors and busy area rugs and pattern on the curtains we went with calmer countertops and I wanted silestone it did not have much movement like marble countertops now with light color floors I think it is more calmer than it should be ..cannot renovate anything again I need to try add few things to bring in life

  • last month

The sample we purchased from the flooring company had more dusky and moody tones and the full batch

You have a perfectly nice combination so far. I’d suggest working with a local designer to help you pull it all together if you aren’t confident or comfortable doing it on your own. If you are keeping the rug shown in the dining area then compare those solid carpet samples to it. If the blue works well and you like it that could set the tone / direction to finish out the spaces…kitchen stools could be upholstered in that blue tone, etc. definitely need a more statement chandelier over the dining table. And I like the matchstick blinds that Chispa posted, large art or a gallery wall by the dining area, etc. don’t fret you’re just getting used to the new floors which look great.

We are planning to get rid of those builder basic pendant lights we can go for some nice pendants with color on them ..yet to start selections on that

  • last month

@thinkdesignlive thanks so much for your response and advice ..I appreciate it and will work towards it

In fact thanks to chispa and everyone who jumped to help me in this panic situation

  • last month

@thinkdesignlive we faced an issue while trying to hire a designer anyone who we spoke to has set a limit of 100k per room per renovation aand that's a whopping amount to us and we could not find anyone who can help only with selections on a need by consultation basis ..will try again

  • last month

@chispa we went with quartz backsplash same as countertops ..it is silestone ethereal glow

I think that once you finish furnishing the area with stools and accessorize the countertops everything will look fine. I would replace the pendants with a solid brass pendant rather than glass to contrast with the white cabinets. Your chandelier seems too small and installed to high, it should be about 30 inches above the tabletop. If you want more colour, you can pick one of the colours in your rugs to coordinate with the surrounding room.

This will look great - YES on the brass pendants for the island.

Deep breath - it's going to be great.

Lisedv I am overwhelmed by your kindness that you went ahead and put those in 3d and showed me how everything will look with the arrangement

I am so grateful thanks so much !!

Hellogardner and lisedv thanks so much for supporting me with your ideas and suggestions

  • last month

Yes I will go with brass or brushed gold pendants and other decorative objects the chandelier at the breakfast nook is given by builder we are yet to buy a good and big one

  • last month

It looks beautiful! I liked the suggestions for a colorful backsplash, but then I read that you already have the quartz for the splash (I couldn't tell from the picture.)

You mentioned new pendants, and I think you can have fun with those. Lighting is so personal, and easy enough to swap out that you can try something that you feel reflects your personality. If you're looking for color, someone here posted showing their pendants from Bicycle Glass. Very pretty! You also don't have to limit yourself to pendants; you have a nice long island and open space and could do a linear chandelier if you find one you love. Might require some patching to the ceiling, but hopefully you can match the ceiling paint.

Lisedv thank you so much for the visual graphics created ..I appreciate your kindness a lot ..thanks for your support

Just_janni thanks for your kind words and I am.thinking of going with brass pendants

  • last month

@chicagoans thanks so much for the linear pendant idea yeah I have see few online and probably that will give some architectural interest

It's gorgeous! Just very different in your eyes. :-)

I'd replace those island pendants, though.

Have you played with the warmth of your bulbs to see if that makes a difference in how you perceive the creaminess of your paint?

I see what you are saying about the white seeming less creamy. It doesn't look as much so now. But it is still a beautiful match, just a different set of expectations. No need to change counters or backsplash. Just get wood legs on your stools to match the dining chairs, or even darker. Throw a darker wood cutting board and salt and pepper shakers on your countertop.

I'm not a huge fan of linear pendents but if that is what you are after, get one made of wood to bring more warmth to the area too. I'd prefer great brass pendents.

@kendrah actually i wanted a floor that has taupe tones and neither a very dark moody floors not too much of saturated wood and reddish yellowish color. so the store where i purchased and the designer associated with the store suggested Reward flooring european oak ancona which has taupe tones when i purchased the sample now when i see that after completing the floors it is so reddish brown i did not get that feel at all which i wanted from a moderate medium soft taupe tones .. with yellow lights this will become worse so i need to go with more balance

I feel more than kitchen the flooring has been an expensive mistake because i never felt taupe tones it is so bright reddish

Yes i have not yet setup my kitchen as the baseboards are yet to fixed ..will set up the counters with warm cutting boards and other accessories

  • last month

@BPMBA yes that will be the next one on the list .. replace kitchen island lighting

  • last month

@kendrah i understand that a tree is a natural element and each batch could be different and each oak tree could have slightly different tannins and tones but i never thought my floors look so red even though the website describes it as a taupe color flooring

  • last month

@kendrah the yellow bulbs make the flooring even more yellowish reddish so I am thinking of going with 3000K bulbs

i’d get some more texture and color in there - other things for the eye to look at

floors are just a backdrop, I think you will get used to them

It looks nice - you just aren't used to it yet. And as others have said, it will look even better when you get some other things in there.

I used to be a cabinet maker and installer. It is not unusual for things not to pan out as it was in your head or even on paper. Even....with the 3D renditioning all this technology has to offer. It happens. Way more than you think.... It's not necessarily poor planning. It's conception and reality. Anyway, any good installer will tell you there are things you come across, whether the way something doesnt quite fits together, Walls or corners arent perfect, Walls and Ceilings arent perfect, or even damage.... You take a look at it, assess the best way to not only fix it but how it would be best fixed. In your case, some people have given you some great ideas. I've often found many rooms to be bland and stark white or some other color. It was all it he accessories and decorations. All solid white walls, colorful carpets, contrasting couch. All solid olive dark green walls and ceiling? White couch, repaint the trim white, or Pictures of white frames and bright backgrounds. So these are the low cost solutions that can make a big difference. I personally can see spending the money to refinish the floor to a dark walnut if its wood and if its a laminate or Vinyl of some sort..... Well then it may mean spending to do it over. Maybe darks (browns, blacks, grays, or even bronze or copper) backsplashes may help bring some complimentary contrast to your room.

@Eric Angloher Thank you .i felt i could have gone with softer off white keeping in mind that i wanted to change my dark floors to oak floors. when i had dark floors the simply white cabinet color was good. when i tried white dove, it read very yellow in my house. but then instead of stopping there i could have tried soft chamois or steam stream is a very clean off-white with creamy undertones close to simply white but not so bright. I could have tried a lot many off-whites and that is something i learnt now.

after changing my floors for few days simply white read like pure white may be especially under those lights but in natural light it still reads creamy so what i understood is that i need to add color without much expensive options and change the lighting.

I learnt that things should be planned and selected together even though we cannot do all renovations at the same time

AI regret my countertops with very pale veining, but I did not like bold veining too. I could have expanded countertop companies' choice like instead of sticking only to Silestone or Cambria.

I did want to try different slabs for backsplash and countertop but somehow could not understand how to pair multiple slabs as one of them would not suit simply white so dropped that idea

Have you played with the bulbs in the space? that might help - FWIW I can sympathize with the regret, we are building and i am dealing with some of that - but truly, it’s a bright pretty space :)

@la_la Girl Yes actually those pendant lights are very cool blue.. once i go with some better lighting it will make some difference ..thanks for your compliments
