It's a little difficult to make suggestions without a floor plan but I think you should try the long sofa perpendicular to the fireplace facing the wall with the television. The television is either mounted too high or you need a taller media cabinet so it doesn't feel like it's floating on the wall. Try placing the love seat facing the fireplace and making an "L" with the sofa. Use one of the two accent chairs in approximately the place where they are now but angle toward the sofa and love seat.

Curtain panels mounted 96"-108" off the floor would add color, texture and softness to the space and really make it feel more "human" scaled. You could use a bamboo or other natural material as a flat roman shade for light control and privacy. I would outside mount them above the window frame to cover any expose drywall between the window opening and the curtain rods. Lighting is also important. You should have at least 3 sources of light at eye level. Think about how you want to use the room. Do you need general light, reading light, accent light?

Also, room has recessed lighting as well as a large fan with a light. Thinking of getting some floor lamps as well.

Big space that can be finished very nicely. Two story window treatments would be great to help fill in and warm up the space and make fireplace wall your focal point. I would not place chairs together, they may work at different ends of the room, can't see print very well. Hard to tell from picture but may need to bring seating in to create conversation area, add coffee table or large ottoman, pillows, throw. A larger, higher piece under tv would be good and you can add some accessories on it to make tv less obvious. Post more pictures later if you can. This can be a beautiful room!

Great room tips & tricks

Many of today's homes feature "great rooms" with vaulted ceilings and wide expanses of floor space. We all appreciate having more space in our homes, but vast rooms can be intimidating to style, and decorating such large spaces is sometimes overwhelming. If you have a cavernous room, here are some tips to help make it functional and cozy.

Divide and conquer

Think about how you want the room to function for your family and divide it into zones. You might picture a conversation area in front of the fireplace for casual relaxation. A pair of comfy chairs and a loveseat can create an intimate seating space. A second area might be designated for entertainment and be home to the television and a long couch or sectional sofa. A third area used for casual dining or board games can be styled with a table-and-chairs set and a chest for storing games or serving pieces. How you'll live in the room determines what kinds of areas to create.

Flooring

Unite the different zones with area rugs in a similar tone to keep the eye flowing from space to space. A base of hardwood or laminate wood flooring ties the individual zones together.

Color

Darker colors on walls make the room seem smaller. In a vast room you can use warm, deeper tones of a color you love but would hesitate to try in a small space. Painting the ceiling a rich, deep tone will visually bring it lower. Wide and intricate moldings also draw down the eye from a high ceiling.

Furniture

Choose larger furniture pieces that fit the scale of the room. Sofas should be comfortable and long-wearing. In a large room, use tall bookcases and darker woods. If you have pairs of bookcases, place them back-to-back and position them as a room divider (be sure to attach them firmly together at the back for safety and stability). Large upholstered ottomans work as movable seating, foot rests and coffee tables. Each seating area should have tables near chair-side so you always have a place to set a glass or cup. Make sure there are lamps in reading areas -- overhead lighting can bathe the room, but task lighting is necessary at table height. Avoid decorating with mirrors and glass-topped tables -- they'll make the room visually expand.

Fabrics and accessories

A large room allows the option of lush colors and heavier fabrics. The scale of the space lends itself to fully upholstered seating in fabrics like velvets, tapestries and leathers. You can define zones with different upholstery fabrics of the same color family -- a cushy chenille sectional to lounge on in the entertainment space, leather club chairs in the reading nook, a tapestry loveseat for the fireside conversation zone.

If you're on a budget, spend less on movable accessories -- throws, accent pillows, framed art pieces -- and concentrate on the larger pieces that will anchor the room and make it functional for your family.

I like the drape idea! Also thinking of a large art piece over the fireplace.

Your chairs should suggest your personal taste. With an ecclectic room you will get the most bang fir your buck by choising a matched set that goes with your sofa. You can use your current accent chairs as well. Choose a table that will tie them tigether.

Tie in buy using fabrics and colors that relate to both. Remember things don't have to match. What do you have as far as tables?

Throws, pillows even rugs can tie your room together. I would look for maybe some club style chairs.

I have some chair examples that would be great. I will post as soon as I find in my picture library. Also a taller shelf with books and accessories is an inexpensive way to get the height.

Wonderful chair. An inexpensive idea is to use cubed ottomans, you can put 4 or six together. Top with a tray and you instantly have a coffee table, accessories and extra seating. Find some accent wood accent tables to bring in some warmth. World Market, Tai Pan Trading and even Target have a nice selection.

Your light floral chair is growing on me. I think it is a keeper. Cant see the other chair very well.

Ok, that is a great chair. The variety of warm colors would look good with the sofa.

Which one - the purple one or the blue/green ones?

I like the purple one. But blue green is nice as well. Decide what colors you want to bring into the room. Your sofa is neutral so either will work. I say the purple out of personal taste.

I love the purple one. Thinking of putting it next to the loveseat. Also thinking of getting 2 of the blue one for the conversation area and taking the white one ot a different room. Do you think this would work. Leaning towards bringing in purples, teal and geeen in the room.

The best way to start the room is to place your existing pieces where you "think" you want them. Sofa, TV , etc. Then define your focal point. Choose your inspiration piece (chair) and place that or them. Then fill in the spaces. It will not seem so overwhelming once you start the placing.

I would most definitely paint it darker, deep textured navy blue, or dark terra-cotta. You have so much light and height here, you can really be adventurous with paint. Drapes, soft sprawling, relaxed furniture.

I would definitely recommend sprucing up the space with some window treatments for those nice windows. Plantation Shutters or Honeycomb Shades would look great! The nice thing about either type is that you could get the 2nd story windows on remote control motorization. Functional and they look great!
