And aren't we supposed to not carry firewood around because of so many new exotic insect pests? We certainly are here.

Anyway, I can see locust being good firewood since it’s hard as heck.

In my area, with limited variety of trees, Oak was always a favorite although it wasn't easy to get right where I lived.

Green Ash, Poplar and Jack Pine were more plentiful in my woods and with selective cutting, I had it piled, all split and dried, 2-3 years ahead of time. Ash and

Poplar were my favorites but if the pine was dead and dried on the stump, it burned satisfactorily but was more prone to creosote buildup in the chimney.

But with any wood, you have to keep an eye on that.

One season, I applied for a permit with the MN DNR to cut all the scrub pin oak that was growing within a new pine plantation. By the time I was finished, I had several (6?) cords of oak wood piled near the house and thought to myself; it just doesn't get any better than this. :^)

I don't use them for firewood, but I have pile of long lowest branches cut off my dawn redwood years ago. Very light and easy to cut off, but they've been laying there in a low, wet area covered w/raked leaves for a decade, and yet look brand-new! That light-weight wood just doesn't rot. The baldcypress wood is pretty much identical.

@BillMN-z4a, 30 years ago we had water lines laid in our subdivision. I went behind them, sawing up the felled hardwoods, and taking it home to stack for the wood stove. We heated the home for three years off that free wood.
