Window treatment ideas?

last month

Hello! This room is a work in progress. Its a tough space with low 7 1/2 ft ceilings and slightly sloped floors.

it was an awful touquiose color previously. Just painted, new bed, dresser and nightstands. Getting rid of white bookcase, new oak bookcase coming soon. still need to add art on walks, some something at end of bed and decorate with extra lighting, accessorie, etc.

Looking for window treatment advice! my gut is telling me to keep it simple and do white or off white roman shades mounted on the trim (still showing some of the trim). I found levolor ones with a small headrail that only needs 1/2 inch of flat space to outside mount onbtrim, and the headrail is pretty slim. another option is drapes but as you can see the window by the bed goes right up to the wall. or cellular shades… but the fabric i like is just as much if not more $$ than what the roman shades would be. blackout needed. I do not have depth for inside mount.

Please let me know your advice/thoughts. There are 5 windows. Thank you!

Match drapes to wall color. These blackout curtains are from Wayfair:

Or go for a print in tan and blue.

Thanks housegal! Yes so many options, on wayfair. But what about that tricky window by the bed? should i then hang them all high but not wide?

Consider roller blinds of the desired thickness, matching the carpet/wall color but in a lighter shade. For a smaller window, complement the sides with fabric curtains on a thin black rod. The curtains can be neutral, or accented with a print or even the color of the wall behind the headboard.

The window near the bed only has roller blinds. A black curtain rod can be used for the entire wall with windows—the black line will complement your dark wall and the room's proportions. In this version, the rod starts in the corner near the bed and extends slightly beyond the small window.

That is, the cornice is not from corner to corner.

I have these natural linen look drapes from wayfair in my primary bedroom which would match the linen bed. how about doing these in my daughters room with thin black rods??

slapped them up there with some tape. theyre almost a perfect match for the upholstered bed. And they have an 86” length which might be perfect for these 88” high ceilings. so obviously they’d be higher than what im showing here, thoughts? ty!

Change out the lights on the nightstands.

Why not consider white blinds with cloth tapes?

Or you could install curtains on the bottom half of the windows for privacy

Thanks Beverly. i had outside mount white wood blinds in there but they didnt keep out the sun in the early am and were pretty bulky looking. i can not do inside mount. no depth.

IMO, you don't quite have enough room for drapes on the window by the bed. I think they would feel a little squished back there. I would go with your original idea of roman shades and add a pretty piece of artwork between the two windows to bridge the gap. The roman shades are softer than cellular shades.

  • last month

I think you will like the roman shades - they will add some softness and still work within the window trim - pretty room!

    Thanks LaLa girl!

Blinds and shades should be mounted inside or outside the trim vs ”on” the trim.

How big is this room? From the photos it doesn't look very small, so my first thought is why the bed on that wall? It looks totally squished in there. Can you post a floor plan? Can the bed go somewhere else?

I like the idea of blinds.

I really do think the shades are the best solution. Matching the trim as closely as possible is a great idea. If it's available, maybe you could have a contrasting trim added to complement another color in the room.

Thanks. There is no where else for the bed to go. as i mentioned previously its a really awkward room. Wood blinds didnt keep the morning sun out and were really bulky looking.

I plan on going with roman shades. Thanks Kat. I will see if i can find something with a trim. i kniw two pages offers that. and yes perhaps ill do above the eindow trim. i did do it on trim for these cellular shades in my bathroom and i like how it came out but cellular stack more neatly. But my point is it can be done . will keep you posted

Now you all have me thinking… Should i do smaller end tables given the space? something like these?

  • last month

Or… since I fo love those nightstands, msybe keep one grey one on the right with a different lamp then add that round table on the left for knick knacks… nightstands dont have to match right?

  • last month

Almost all of our bedrooms have white or cream inside mount , pleated shades. I then have side panels. We pull the shades down when needed after dark, and keep them completely up during the day. They are really not noticed when up.

Now onto the nightstands! Do i keep both or add a different one on the left?

I like the matchung pair you have there - they seem to fit the space

fwiw I’d be so tempted to put up some pretty wallpaper behind the bed :)

Thanks LaLa girl! yes i do love wallpaper. something to think about. although husband would not be happy since we just painted lol.

I'd keep both as per my mock-up.

You have a beautiful, deep color on your accent wall. I wouldn't change it for wallpaper. At least not yet. But in a few years, why not?

thanks tachch! heres the thing thiugh, My floors slope down one inch on the right side of bed. quirky old home… in this pic you can see wgat i mesn

Any tricks on how to fix?

  • last month

Oh.. foundvsome one inch risers on amazon!

  • last month

Personally, I like the matching nightstands. They fit the space well, considering it's a bit of a tight fit anyway. I don't think the table would make that much difference and then you'd lose the storage. I think adding some small, light accessories could help. If you don't keep anything in the open shelves, perhaps a light colored, pretty bowl or something in there would brighten up the dark hole. Risers are a great idea to get the height of the nightstands evened up.

Try placing the lamp on the nightstand to the right on a couple of books of different thicknesses. Experiment to find the best combination of color and size. I don't think you need to replace your nightstands.

In this case, I would intentionally make the lamp on the right a little higher than the one on the left.

  • last month

ok thanks to you both! Im going to try the risers first then see if i need to pkay around with the lamps.

Hi! so decided to take the advice of Beverly and Norwood architects and go with wood blinds. As much as i wanted to do linen roman shades the small bracket fabric options were lacking.

So now a question about which color white. Both of these are an off white but one is slightly brighter than my trim the other slightly creamier. which one works better? Slightly brighter white is on the left. my trim is SW pure white. TIA!!

and with my other room colors…

    Brighter white…,

    Creamier white…

They both look pretty close. What are your thoughts?

Im torn! the brighter is more crisp and solid (no texture) the creamier one is a true off white with texture. I have so many windows in there… so im just afaid the brighter white might be too stark but then the creamier one too muddy. of course wish i could see it all installed first then decide lol.

It's hard to tell without seeing them in person but personally, I always tend to lean a little warmer. I find bright white to be a bit jarring.

    Thanks latinparadise!

What about top down bottom up black out Roman shades? The advantage is that you can have privacy during the day but still natural light (when the top part is open)…then at night you’d have black out when they are up.

Thanks thinkdesignlive but i cant do inside mount with my windows. no depth. outside mount roman shades is just too much fabric with all 5 windows. the wood blinds will look a little more streamlined.

Any further thoughts now that you've lived with the samples for a bit? I saw a link the other day on here to a company that makes fabric shades that mount inside with only 1/2" of space. I can dig around to try to find it if you're curious.

I went with the slightly brughter white! everythung i read was telling me best to go slightly brighter and that this color (sunset cloud nine) with south seas blinds was made to blens with the popluar white trim being used today.. so fungers crossed! if anything they will definitely be better than my old stark white ones. will post wheh theyre up! thanks

Wonderful! Looking forward to seeing the results.
