Shades for Kitchen & Living

Will this combo of shades work? The kitchen will have natural shades and the living room soft fold Roman shades? I want personality, but I also don’t want to forgo timeless. Thank you!!

In a word? No.If the two spaces are open to one another? ONE shade variety, please. Pick a warmer NEUTRAL for both.......especially due to your granite tops.

We can't see enough of the living room, or the kitchen, so more jpegs, with all the sades up, in daylight.

They are open to one another. We are redoing our kitchen later this year , so that’s the hard part. What’s a warm neutral? I’ll post more pictures later this morning. Thank you so much! I’ve been losing sleep over this. 🫣

Would the swatch and these natural shades be a better choice? And then you would dress up the space with drapes? I’m trying to avoid beige and gray, but don’t want to sacrifice taste or longevity for wacky.

Personally, I'd wait until I completed the kitchen before I'd choose shades for the adjoining areas. The kitchen project should be your first priority, and it will be quite messy, so why subject your new shades to the dust and debris that's produced by a kitchen renovation?

But to answer your question, a warm neutral is one with more brown/tan/yellow/red/orange tones in it rather than gray/blue/green/violet. For example, of the two shades you posted, the Sea Salt is cool/gray and the Oatmeal is warm/brown. I agree with Jan and would use the same natural fiber shades in both rooms.

Why are you doing windows now, with a planned kitchen reno in the offing? Why would you need "gray" anything?!

If you want the look of natural woven wood shades, do you want privacy liner? How much? I would look at Horizons

But I really don't understand the rush, with a kitchen reno involved.

Post the WHOLE of the kitchen , living space both, all angles

The reason for window treatments now are the blinds are not in good condition and a couple are broken. I can’t stand these type of blinds- they are all different too.

No, I don’t need a privacy liner for any of them.

I guess I could wait until the kitchen and bathrooms are done. I just hate these blinds and I’m eager to make this house my own. We moved here in November.

    Thanks again for the help.

    More of kitchen.

    I agree with waiting.

In your original picture with the greenish blinds in the eating area - this seems really off to me. I see a very colorful rug under the table, but no green in it. I believe I’d stick with all matching tan or beige or brown or camel tones for both rooms. Something to tie the rooms together.

Your current kitchen is very nice. What are you changing there?

Thank you. I would change the counter tops and maybe the stain of the cabinets. It’s a little too dark.

No, those two fabrics are not a good idea.

Using different fabrics can work, but it has to complement and relate to the rest of the design. In my previous house I used an expensive linen embroidery floral fabric for the family room drapes and a cheaper striped fabric for the kitchen nook drapes. They shared the same colors.

Photo of the floral and stripe. In an open space the fabrics need to relate to each other.

I would use inside mounted duette cellular shades that match your trim color and then do mock roman shades to add the color. You'll use less fabric for a mock shade.

Nice space! if it were me, I’d want to pull some of the warm tones from the leather up on the walls and would go with simple bamboo blinds (they add loads of texture and warmth imo) and I would have them all the same

    ^^^^

    We moved here in November."

With now, a buggy far out in front of a horse.

Good grief! You haven't yet even planned a kitchen, you also plan a bath reno. ARE there limitless resources?

What is plan for flooring?! What is climate that demands tile? Do you have answer" Or it will remain?!

No, I don’t need a privacy liner for any of them...........

I'm not your mom. If you are bound and determined to do it? Do it. I'd leave them naked until I knew my KACHING for the rest, and what was entailed.

That’s beautiful! I love your spunk Jan. We are in Florida. Yes, we are doing flooring too. No there are not limitless resources, so we have to space these changes out. My son’s bathroom is first etc. I wish we could move out and do it all at once. I didn’t realize my initiation into these home improvements was all wrong. Good thing I have a place like this to ask tried and true professionals.

So.............. the FIRST thing you do is post the bathroom for the son. As it looks right NOW.

Then you show the ENTIRE kitchen - all of it every angle. .......

You consider the flooring first- as it will need to go everywhere that is open space/connected, unless a bath and POSSIBLY a bedroom. How many square feet is that?

    See what I mean? :)

I think the nesting urge is wonderful, but you have been there less than THREE months.

    Show the kids bath...

There's a hierarchy when doing a home remodel/renovation. First do the systems--HVAC, roof, electrical and plumbing upgrades, etc. Then do the messy/disruptive projects--kitchens, baths, flooring, millwork, lighting. Then furniture, floor and window coverings. Lastly, accessories. Think about it like baking a cake--get the ingredients, measure them, mix them, bake in oven, cool, icing. You don't ice the cake first.

I'd concentrate my efforts in planning your bath and kitchen and forget about the window treatments for now.

If you already had a master plan and definite color scheme, you could put all the samples on a mood board and do something. Still as noted you would subject the new blinds to a log of dust ( coukd takd them down though.) But if you don’t need privacy immediately, then follow advice to wait. You should probably get more informed about color schemes, warm vs cool, contrast, etc, and start collecting pictures of kitchens you like & focus on why, plus those you doing like and why. If you are changing counters, floors, & cabinets that is a big move, and who knows what direction you will take. And will you intend to make it all work with existing adjacent furniture.

Luckily we don’t have anything structural that we have to update. I’m just rushing the order of things because the blinds drive me bonkers. The order of things make sense. We also were planning on doing the entire home at once for a discount on the shades. In the end, it’s not a tiny expense. I will probably wait.

    Aha!

We have a 5x 8 bath, and unless you are accessing another area for more space? It's what it is, or making it ensuite? . Is he too young to shower? Assuming he is NOT?

Assuming.....what? You despise the granite? Me too. You don't like the Dark wood vanity? You hate the tile on the floor?

Change the vanity top. PAINT the vanity, get new hardware! Put a great color on the walls! Take off the cheapo builder mirror! Get a 30Inch round free hang! Get a cool light to replace what I can not see.

Buy towels in his favorite color. Ditto the bath mat, Is there a linen closet behind that door? You need what for him?

Unless a leak? Put some lipstick on it.!!

Hell would freeze OVER , before I gutted that.... especially when I had a kitchen and miles of flooring ahead of me.: ) I'd grab the lipstick...unless a mold or structural issue.

I can’t stand the shower doors. I was hoping to get rid of those. Update the tile in there and right, I don’t like the counter top. The rest is easy to fix, I imagine.

Sorry to interrupt but I have always wondered about that type of window treatment @JAN MOYER showed (Horizons natural woven shades) - what is the best way to clean them? I absolutely love the look.

@sellsellsell I have the exact blinds as these ^^^ in several rooms, and I've sold them to clients as well. They don't really get dirty. If they are a bit dusty, just use a vacuum on a light suction, or use a Swiffer duster.

    ^^ ditto

    Vacuum them .....occasionally : )

You cannot just change shower tile. You have to demo the entire shower - gut it. Tear the whole thing out, build it new, waterproof it, tile is the very last decorative finish to a shower.

Put a price tag on how much you want to spend on your son's bathroom: $2k, $10k, $25k. And you will get a lot of feedback on what is possible for what your budget. It sounds like nothing is wrong with the function of the room, you just find parts of it unattractive.

Would you hate the shower less if there were an attractive vanity and wall color to draw your attention away from the shower? I think you are just looking to make aesthetic refreshes, not actually renovate. Is the same true with the kitchen?

And yes, hold off on the blinds for a little while longer. Patience. Patience. Patience.

I am confused how did this become abthroom dilemma. I will answer about blinds . I hate wood \blinds they eiter close off all the light and view or provide a poor view if down and open But IMO window coverings ar chosen not just for looks but function. I do think think all ones seen together should be at least close to the same style and colorway. To choose for you space I need to see your spaces and timeless is a fleeting thing. I would not put those 2 choices in spaces seen together .

It became a bathroom dilemma since the OP stated that she needs to overhaul her son's bathroom in addition to choosing window treatments.
