I did not know there was such a thing until I spent some time in Tucson and became enamored with the Palo Verde (Parkinsonia microphylla), which is the state tree of AZ. They are abundant in the Sonoran desert and can live for a few centuries. The green bark is exquisite, and it serves as a nurse tree for the iconic saguaro cactus. They are normally shrubby, but single-stemmed specimens can be quite impressive. These pictures were taken from a second story balcony overlooking the adjacent property backyard.
