I'm doing absolutely nothing. Perhaps it comes from having lived in Chicago, a half mile from Lake Michigan for a decade, but this storm doesn't scare me. It also helps that I am not glued to the weather channel. They are already downgrading snow fall totals. For us in the NE, it will snow, it will be cold. We will deal.

Looking forward to 80F this weekend and then it goes back to "freezing" 60's next week!

Used to live in the northeast and I do not miss the cold, snow and ice.

Apparently the line went around the block at Trader Joe on the UWS today. Ridiculous. You would think it had never snowed in NYC before. Spoke with someone in Alaska yesterday. They had eleven feet of snow and were managing just fine.

This thread is making me happy I live in Vancouver. We haven’t seen a speck of snow so far this winter. Hoping all those impacted by the impending storm stay safe.

Very apt description above, "Gunshots" all night long,,,followed by a cold morning sun shining on arboreal tragedy, a work of weather art ..... magnificent.. Hundreds on the avenue near the George Eastman House ( mostly Japanese descent ) with digital cameras out walking the streets for the most spectacular shots.

The snowstorm of 1993 was impressive. That one I remember pretty well.

Hunkering down in NoVa. Planning to make a big pot of minestrone and invite the neighbors over. Will definitely bake something simple and comforting— ginger cookies? Spice cake? This will be the first major snow storm we’ve experienced without a dog. Miss the dogs desperately but not the cold, icy walks at 0 dark thirty. A power outage could change those plans. Not sure what to expect as this is our first big snowfall in this home, in cute little 18th C town. Previous home was in modern suburb with buried power lines. Yikes!😬

live in north Texas and fully admit to being a weather wimp. We drip faucets, cover landscape plants, etc, etc, etc. And, yes, we do not know how to drive on ice, so I will be under voluntary house arrest for the next few days. I am prepared to complete a few small projects to stave off boredom. I have peanut butter, cat food, toilet paper, and wine, so I will survive. Just praying we don't lose power.

I understand why folks in Texas or other warmer weather areas would be concerned and planning for this. It is really outside of the ordinary. But for folks in the Northeast to be obsessed with snow and freezing temps in January? It isn't as though we're having slow news days these days!

Ah, Barney Greengrass, Zabars, Murray's. That's where it's at. The UES can take their botox. I too have never used uber eats. When I want take out, I place the order over the phone and the restaurant send their own bike delivery guy.

All of New York is not the same climate . What happens here....stays here and. It stays longer in Buffalo, and if you may be in Ithaca, or the Adirondack north? Good LUCK!!!

When we get an actual Spring in April? People literally shed clothing like its July 4th. Wow!!! It's 60 and the sun is out!

Definitely planning on hunkering in; coffee, pottery, french toast, eat some healthy already made soup, but also maybe make a not so healthy pizza, try to get some exercise, and possibly some cleaning, perhaps play some board games, see what people are working on on Houzz, etc. watch the snow fall, cry when it turns to ice, maybe watch some movie(s) and/or series.

Originally we were going to get massive snow totals, (that was exciting) then less snow some ice, and less snow a bit more ice, now not much snow and a lot of ice (not so exciting, more frightening). And as Jan points out, different regions, even within the same state, have more lingering effects from the snow. Down here, it typically melts in a few days. However, we aren't getting above freezing any time soon, so lots of ice-sticking around, bringing down power lines and trees, and making driveways and roadways into skating rinks, and not melting-ugh!

I am happy that we decided to get a whole house generator when we built this house. It was either that or another wood stove. Since we are getting older and wood heat is labor intensive, we decided to spend on the generator.

Prayers and wishes for the safety and health for the power company employees, the people who have to drive to get to work, the people who may not have power or heat, etc. It may be a devastating storm, but hopefully all the media hype will have encouraged some people have a plan.

Jan, are you anywhere Rochester? I had a winter holiday gig there once upon a time, and the lake effect snow was prodigious! I've never forgotten it. But we all managed to get from the housing to the workplace and back, so … not awful, just a lot of snow.

Exactly! Same for Michigan. We live here, we know the routine. Stock up on essentials, including a supply of potable water if you're on a well and you don't have a generator (which is me), keep 1/2 tank of gas in the vehicle at all times, make sure your phones are charged, etc etc etc. It's all common sense, really. That, and don't go anywhere if you don't have to. And that includes NOT ordering food delivery service -- if it's dangerous for YOU to be on the road, it's dangerous for THEM, too.

Ditto. I've noticed over the last several years the forecasts are blown out of proportion, even on the local stations. They talk it up so people will turn in -- doom and gloom sells. Quite often the TV/radio forecast is worse than it actually turns out to be. I wonder when John Q Public is going to just start completely disregarding the forecasts -- boy cried wolf and all that. I'm pretty much to that point already.

I do check weather.gov to keep abreast of the general forecast, it seems to be more accurate than the local talking heads -- just the facts, not sensationalized.

ETA: My comments aren't meant to minimize the impact to more southerly states for whom this storm is way out of the norm -- yes it's going to be bad for you guys, you aren't as prepared as us up in the north for this and perhaps some areas aren't really prepared at all.

I have a weather widget that lets you choose the reporting source. Frequently none of them agree with any of the others. And forecasts are so "up to the minute" that they change throughout the day. I think they're more like aftcasts.

North Shore Massachusetts. 7 degrees with a feel like of below zero right now. Expecting over a foot of snow tomorrow. The plan is to stay home. We have a very old house that we have improved over the years with new windows and doors and new insulation and heating systems. So we are feeling ready.

We had the neighbors over for a pre-confinement martini party last night. 🍸

We checked the generator yesterday. Have penty of food and booze. Cancelled tonights dinner guest. No one wants to go out.

I live in Canada winter is part of the package and does not have ahuge effect on my life . We have -27 celsius this morning but going up to -15 sort of a heat wave. I drive to get what I need , go out shovel snow for myself and a couple of neighbors for exercise and carry on with the day. I have to admit I don't love driving in the winter but good tires a full tank and a charged up phone and off I go.

Patricia, sounds like we‘re living in the same time zone. Same routine here. We’re into day 4 with temps around -25 C, and that’s without the windchill factor. Happens every winter. It’s the driving that puts me off.

@chispa…. I hate the cold, snow, etc. Gave away my skis & ice skates years ago. We’re going to watch the AMEX golf tournament ( on the course ), 70’s & sunny.

We have a generator hooked into the gas line that comes on automatically. We usually have plenty of food in the freezer. And, our flights home from a trip to Texas missed the storm. We flew through DC, got out before the storm hit, say the new reporters roaming the airport looking for the best locations to set up and see what was about to hit them.

Once again, this storm has been exaggerated.

The best part of it? I have a 3 lb dog who wants to be outside ALL THE TIME (= I have to go out there also because I don't like having him out in the yard without me - a hawk tried to snatch my neighbor's little dog a few years ago).

He will go out in the cold and in the rain - and loves to be out when it's ridiculously hot outside. HOWEVER, when I open the door - and there's a few inches of snow on the ground - he decides to be an "inside dog" for the day (I have to cheer him on to get him to go out and do his "business" - and then he runs right back to go inside).

I understand his "reluctance" about going out in the snow - it has to be very uncomfortable to have snow on your tummy + private parts (my SO made a path for him across the patio + shoveled a little area for him out in the grass - but the snow on the grass still hits his tummy area because he's so little)

Once he saw the snow this morning, he's only gone out one other time so far today . . .

It's a nice break for me.

@K Laurence, the last time I went skiing was around 7 years ago, in our previous State, when we could drive 6 hours to a real mountain. I still have my skis/boots stored in the closet here in FL! Why? Who knows! My DH probably thinks we'll go skiing again at some point, but he's had a few joints replaced since then, so probably not a good idea! One incident during a few days of skiing could mess up months of golfing.

Those of you with generators, be careful and don't forget the basic safety rules when running them.

Then boyfriend now hubby and I survived the Blizzard of 78 in the Boston area, so whatever comes at us today/tomorrow (western Massachusetts now) ain't nutthin!!! I took the MBTA home to Malden from Boston and hid in the house for a couple of days until my dang nursing supervisor down the street said "The National Guard truck is coming to take us all back down to the hospital"...where I camped in for 4 more days. He drove from Boston to home in Danvers in a TR6 (!!!). Ah yes......gotta love New England in January!!!

I remember that storm in '78! I lived in Queens, NY, and my car was buried for two weeks!!! Miraculously, when I finally dug it out, it started right up! Yay, VW Karman Ghia! Sadly no longer made.

I don't remember the blizzard of 1978. I think I was in California when it hit. Surely I knew about it, I just didn't experience it.

@dani_m08, how's your tiny pup doing today? My dog is bigger, just under 10 lbs. Yesterday she didn't mind trotting around for a bit in the cold, but today she barely peed and then noped on back. She didn't even make it the whole three yards back to the door before she got on her hind legs and flourished her pitiful paws. I had to pick her up. She wouldn't even walk inside the lobby.

I predict a lot of cleanup on Aisle 5 over the next few days.

I am in NC. The last time i remember us getting any real snow was in 2014. By real snow for us I mean over 2" HA! But really it could be a flake and people actually lose their $3!& . . The particular storm pictured was 3-6" of snow. Yes it is a real photo and of course three doctored up versions which are hillarious.

Today we are sitting at about 1/4" of ice and temps lingering around 13 degrees with the wind chill.

What's next as I hunker down...well do I have a deal for you! I'm about to submit a kitchen dilemma for y'all to feast your eyes on! My brother is doing a gut and reno of his current kitchen in a layout you have seen many many times. However, I don't know the actual solution for this kitchen. I told him we needed to bring it to the Pros to take a look at it. He already knows about you @JAN MOYER (you're a household name in these parts down here!). ARE YOU READY?!

What came out of this storm for me was that neither I nor my husband will EVER shovel snow again! Contacted my landscaper to shovel, and the driveway and all walks (I'm on a corner) were done by 5 AM!!!
