Winter series viewing

We picked up some good DVDs at the library Friday, Waking Ned Devine, House of Sand and Fog, The Way Way Back, and a series. We have yet to watch the movies, having become hooked on the series that we miss whenever it is showing on tv. A French Village.

Any timely viewing on your screens?

We binged an older series I don’t recommend: The Undoing. It started out ok, then just dragged on and on with no reward at the end. And Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant seemed like they were just calling it in.

We just started Coldwater because we like Andrew Lincoln so much. I’m mixed about it, it’s quite dark.

Will check out A French Village, thanks!

We are trying to watch all the main Oscar nominees. We watched Sinners, which was not at all what I expected. It was…interesting. We also watched Train Dreams, which was interesting to see right after finishing The Overstory book. It was good, kind of a quiet movie.

I watched His & Hers, which was pretty good until things got a little too convoluted at the end.

I am seeing Song Sung Blue at the theater with a friend this week.

The French series often strikes a chord, depending on the day’s news.

Thanks for this. I need recommendations. I've been too consumed with work and news.

We watched "The Roofman". I remember seeing the story on the news, had an award winning cast....not that good. Streamed "Trading Places", an oldie, but still made us laugh. "Running Man", 2026, the new one....was OK. Went to the theatre, the one with heated reclining seats & food service, saw Avatar "Fire & Ash". Great special effects.

I started watching the big C on Netflix. Wasn’t sure I liked it at first but it’s grown on me.

I’ve wanted to watch the big C, I’m glad to know it is on Netflix. I’ll check it out, thanks.

I watched the first season of A French Village several years ago on Am...z. I thought it was really well done and really liked it. But then I was furious when Am..z wanted more money to see the rest of it! I'm on a tight budget and this struck me as "Bait and Switch." Still haven't seen the rest of it but I remember that first season in great detail. I keep hoping it will show up on Netflix--and I no longer watch anything on Am..z.

We recently binge watched The Beast In Me, The Pitt, and currently The Diplomat. DH watched Landman. I couldn't get into it.

Recommended by friends, and we will check out next, Little Disasters, Love and Death, Nurse Jackie, His and Hers, and Ripple.

The Lincoln Lawyer S3 starts 2/5.

@dani_m08 So many good RomComs back then. Nothing comes close nowadays.

dani, I LOVE Landman! Although, it has really good and not-so-good episodes. Season Two's ending was so good! Glad it's coming back for Season Three. Billy Bob Thorton is so good in it and I have a major crush on Andy Garcia!

Hubby and I watched RIP with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck-it was pretty good.

I watched the Elizabeth Smart documentary last night-I guess I never knew everything that happened and it filled in some holes for me. Glad it wasn't a series, so was a quick watch.

Was going to start Man on the Inside but then saw Mary Steenbergen was in it-and something about her just makes her hard to watch. For instance, I loved the movie The Book Club and loved all the character's except her (and Jane Fonda)-I fast forward through their scenes.

I actually didn't watch too much TV during the winter storm-which was only snow and low temps for us.

I liked Sinners. Hated His & Hers-- the acting was horrific.

Just finished the Spanish series Rage on HBO and liked it a lot. I highly recommended it, but only if you like dark humor.

Last night we finished The 99 Year Old Man, a new documentary about Mel Brooks. It was pretty interesting, and eerie to see Rob Reiner, obviously filmed quite recently.

“Has anyone watched "Landman" with Billy Bob Thorton?”

I tried a few episodes, because I like everyone in it, and full-body cringed through each one. I think it’s comically bad — extremely cliched and juvenile, and unnecessarily vulgar. I usually like Billy Bob, but wow does he overact in this. Everything is so exaggerated.

It’s a big deal here, in and around Fort Worth. We’ve seen them filming in several locations, which is fun. A friend ran into Sam Elliot (I love him so much) in a store a while back. I hope to someday. :D

ETA: We didn’t renew BritBox a few months ago; I think we’ll subscribe again. I see a few new shows I’d like to watch.

I have too many TV rules: No extreme gore or violence, no cancer plot, no Nazi or WWII, no shows where the entire plot is dark drug dealing. I looked at these comments and opted for When Harry Met Sally.

Laceyvail, check your local library system for DVDs, and streaming. We get many of our movies and series from the library.

The Norwegian series Pernille on Netflix is pretty good.

We’ve started rewatching one that got us through covidtimes, Being Erica. It surprises me how my dh enjoys it. He’s a film buff, likes Tarrantino, Lena Wermuller, and darker. But then he’s also always up for a rewatch of Mary Poppins or 101 Dalmations.

Great idea to check the library for DVD's. I also refuse to watch any series where only the first season is included with the service.

I also recently started "The Big C", I am enjoying it so far. Just started Season 3 will see how it goes, I have a history of getting bored with a good number of series once I get into Season 3.

I really liked Pernille. There are so many good Scandinavian series. Secrets we Keep was pretty good. Loved Borgen.

I recently watched the Springsteen movie “Deliver me from Nowhere”- I enjoyed it but wasn’t wowed. I do recommend it if you like Bruce.
In honor of Bobby Weir’s recent death, we rewatched,The Other One” on Netflix. It made us feel slightly less heartbroken to be reminded of what an interesting, grounded person and inventive musician he was. I really love(d) him, and reckon I saw him play about 800 times over 50+ years. I recommend it highly if you have any interest in him or the Grateful Dead.
I also watched “Ned Kelly” and although I was loving it at the beginning I was meh about halfway through; I thought the acting was good, the screenplay was meh. I expected better.

I started watching Bookclub, an American woman moves to Scotland and to try to make friends she forms a book club. Netflix or Prime, I can’t rememver She’s actually pretty annoying, and I’m not sure I’ll watch the fourth episode. I want to like Bookish, on after All Creatures, but I can’t sit still that long. I have to see if I can stream on the app.

@Jilly - I like Billy Bob Thorton and really like Sam Elliot - I would love to meet him.

I love Jon Hamm - one of my daughters bought me a pillow that said "Mrs. Jon Hamm" on it several years ago (while Mad Men was still running). I also have always liked Andy Garcia. The four of them in the same series gave me high hopes.

My SO really likes Landman - so, I've seen every episode with him. I've liked some episodes + thought other ones were not great.

Jon died too early - wish it would have been his wife instead (I generally like Demi Moore - except her accent isn't good and her character bugs me).

I think the story line is interesting re: oil drilling/speculating/etc. I own part of a wind farm company - and it was interesting to see some of the similarities and the many differences.

HOWEVER, if I could get get a shotgun (which I assume would be easy in Texas), I'd shoot the spoiled ex-wife/wife/mom and daughter (actually, the daughter's character has become a bit better towards the end of S2). The way the ex-wife/mom acted about her daughter going to cheer camp for a week made me want to slap her. Wow - I sound like a violent person - and I'm not.

The series should focus more on the business aspect and tone down the family life a bit.

I've started a few other series - but none of have been that great. In fact, I feel like I am always asking my SO what we've been watching because I get bored after 3-4 episodes.

    Maybe I will re-watch Downton Abby . . .

Hated His & Hers-- the acting was horrific.

This actually makes me want to watch it. My husband and I love watching terrible acting and making fun of it. We've been known to watch Lifetime movies on Amazon.

In that case, you might love it!

dani, I agree! Jon died too early and wish it were his wife instead. Funny! And regarding Demi Moore-she is so dang skinny! If she's doing that on purpose, big mistake. She looks anorexic. Proves my point that older women need just a little meat on their bones.

    The mom and daughter-Oh my!

bpath, thanks for the suggestion, but our small rural libraries have nothing like that. And I don't have any way to play DVDs, etc. I watch everything on my computer screen (biggish screen). Never have owned a TV.

Thanks for the recs for The Big C. I’m on episode 3. I think Laura Linney is the only actor I would want to see in this role, she is amazing. Thanks.

Subtitles, so that may exclude some of you. Walter Presents! Every series we have watched is wonderful. You can find on PBS. We started with Nordic Murders and were sold. Right now, we are watching ASTRID.

Short series, but watched the first episode of Mel Brooks The 99 Yr Old Man on HBOMax - pretty great!

If you want a good distraction, filled with soap opera, villains and romances and a lovely countryside, then try a place to call home. It’s Australian and wonderful. Plus, they tackle very difficult topics for the time. 1950s)

The Night Manager just released a second season. Season 1 was released ten years ago! We're rewatching the first season as we remember very little about it but I see why we liked it so much.

@OllieJane - I was a bit shocked when I saw how thin Demi Moore looked in the series. She is scary thin!

Just finished the second season of Night Watchman. Wasn't expecting that ending!

I was wondering why everyone looked so much older...didn't know it took 10 years to get to season 2.

What is the Big C all about? The title put me off.

Laura Linney is diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and doesn’t want to tell anyone. I’m only a couple of episodes in an, can I say I’m enjoying a show about someone with cancer? But I am. The storyline so far is not about the physical aspect but about her life, and how she wants to live. I‘m going to have to get the rest of series from the library; every time I try to watch it on Netflix now it starts buffering half-way through.

Check it out. Laura Linney is amazing.

I loved Big C…I watched it a long time ago. This is making me want to watch again!

I have not watched, but DH watched Ponies and really liked it. DS liked it, too.
