Stairway Artwork to Compliment Dining Room Artwork

last month

I am looking for the new artwork for our stairway that will compliment our dining room artwork, without competing with it. The stairway goes down to a finished basement and is located between our dining room and living room fireplace. The stairway width is 42". I have narrowed it down to 4, but open to other suggestions. Please rank them by which you think best compliments or provide something new. The mockups were done with ChatGPT, so that are not exactly to scale. Thanks in advance for your help!!

Soft colors of gold, blue, ivory, gray 36x72
Gold-to-blue-to-ivory 24x72
Gold-to-ivory fade 36x72

I chose #1 only because it has all the colours of the other and did not look like the painting was sideways.

Choose art because you love it and not because it compl-E-ments something else in the space.

Can you share any real pictures?

  • last month

@westcoast do you want real pictures of the artwork options with links? The fireplace is real (no AI) and the dining room is mocked up with a piece of art I am currently having painted. Didn't make since to show a blank wall with what I am trying to coordinate with.

It is hard to plan how to coordinate without seeing real spaces. So until the art is on the dining wall and we can see the actual hallway and those art options I feel this is a test in AI appreciation or not.

@westcoast these are the best pictures I have. The dining chairs are sideways to avoid our puppy from potting on the rug. We are having our floors refinished and the dining room wall being painted so the last picture is the empty space which is what it looks like right now. I am a planner and wont wait until my art piece is done in June to complete the decorating of the rest of the house.

@westcoast we also had one of the round pillars removed and redid the existing ones to square. It is a work in process  :-)

I would not pull colors or style from the large painting...why distract from it?

I would find something that has a subject such as nature or figurative or photo.

The stairwell is dark so a black and white would stand out plus go with the interior design palette.

I agree with the above you buy art because you love it. I would want a change to not detract from the one you are having painted.

I would leave it empty--too much "decorating". no soul..

Make sure it resonates with you as well.

@Maureen Thanks for the suggestions. I love that picture you have as the example. I will definitely be removing what is on the floor too.

@tracefloyd Never thought of doing a black & white picture there. That is definitely an interesting idea. It would pull in a lot of the rest of our design.

It seems very dark down there. I’d choose something in a cream or white color. Could be a small textile hung, or a cool black and white photo.

The area needs some addition light to highlight the wall.

I would not select another canvas. I would select 3D object/s

No more art; it is the easy way out. Think about other options, like this one with a mirror, or Beverly's. Even a peel and stick wall paper with a mirror can give that space interest.

@BeverlyFLADeziner those are unique ideas! I have a 3-D piece that I need to move somewhere, but concerned it might look too heavy here. I can easily add additional lighting.

@BeverlyFLADeziner I also have 2 of these from Crate & Barrel that I will be relocating somewhere in the house.

Those wall pieces look reflective which might brighten it up. There are extensions that screw into a can light socket so that spots are aimable. We use them.

I would certainly consider these options before buying more 'stuff' for the walls. Looks as though they could work depending the the actual size of the wall.

I presume you purchased what you already have because you love it. If so, then use them. Your space will sing if it is filled with some personality, things that stand out to you, rather than things you think merely look nice together.

    Agreed, lighting is key.

    Briliant puppy gate.

@BeverlyFLADeziner @User @tracefloyd and the rest of you ---- Thanks so much for all of your suggestions!!! You are all wonderful and have pointed me in another direction that I hadn't thought of previously. I have mocked up my existing pieces and a cool mirror I saw on AllModern. I will start with my existing pieces before buying anything new. Again.....thank you!!!
