Help! Need light suggestions for over kitchen island and kitchen sink

last month

Kitchen remodel is about 80% complete. Island will also include an attached to be built table height table with table legs same mocha color as island with same Taj Mahal quartzite countertop. Need help deciding what pendant lights work for my kitchen and should I put lights just over island or both island and table. Island is 51"x 68"; table will be 40"x 60". Should I also put a light over sink. I think I will add shades to kitchen window and patio door.

    Beautiful countertop!

All recessed is the way to go IMO. Why muck up the sight lines. I admit I am biased. I hate hanging light fixtures.

your island will get a lot of use as its a main counter/work area.....note the double row of smaller fixtures [pic 1] ..... consider the actual amount of light needed there on a day to day basis.....smaller pieces also in pic 2 will allow a sufficient number in placement of your choice..... pics 3 and 4 show differentiated table fixture from island/sink selection.

Can you create a few possible configurations [with what you like] various sizes / number / and placements .....then get the feedback. Sitting down in lighting stores [or on line] browsing through catalogues has always helped me w lighting as there is a lot out there....the staff can help edit your flagged likes ....It can be overwhelming.

I do think w the high ceiling and tall cabinets I'd pick fixtures here , whether pendants/ close to ceiling type ..but not just recessed cans .

these smaller pendants /transitional style can work , .....you get the ability to install the number you need /achieves a moderate focal point above island/table .....as opposed to large bulky pendants. pic 3 and 4- sized differently and more traditional. Your cabinets have a nice demure quality / in light finish / can overwhelm if not careful.

Love all your kitchen choices so far! With your future table being permanently at the end of your island, you could consider a linear fixture instead of multiple pendants. I won't try to recommend any because IMO lighting is so personal, and comes at several price points from the affordable to the scary pricey.

I'm the opposite of porkchop in that I like hanging fixtures, but it's a good point that they can change sightlines. My recommendation is to start searching (maybe look at inspiration photos first) and before you buy anything try the balloon trick. I learned that here (actually on the old Gardenweb site) and the photo below is from my old kitchen. I had a 3 globe fixture to hang over a table, so I mocked it up with balloons and moved the table underneath it. We had a couple meals and futzed with the balloon heights until it felt right. Bonus is it gave the electrician a guide as well as a chuckle. Anyway, try this first with balloons and see how you like the visual from different points in your space. It may help you narrow down from large fixtures to small and slender, depending on how you feel about the visual space taken by the pretend fixtures.

Is it too late to talk you out of adding a permanent table on the island. from what i can see its going to make entering the kitchen difficult, the chairs will protrude into the main entrances. separating them a bit wil take away that barrier. you could always push your table up to the island if you really prefer afterwards, but a fixed table really limits your options.

Whereas, I hate recessed lighting -- ceiling acne. I'd go with three medium-small pendants: one over the sink, two over the island. Since everything else is very simple, I'd opt for something a little more standout. I'd go for stained glass, but a colored globe could look great too. I'd avoid clear or a metal. A pendant isn't a big commitment -- many can be changed as easily as a light bulb.

Lighting can do 3 things. Task puts shadow free brighter 450 minimum lumens on counter and sink work zones. Ambient gives general room light. Decorative dresses the space. You have recessed and under cabinet lights. I'd put Costco 17.5w led bulbs in all your recessed 6" cans and install dimmers. I'd continue with recessed cans for the island and table. You have a recessed matching can over the sink that isn't on. That's enough for there with an led bulb.
