Do I need the shutters?

last month
last modified: last month

I had my concrete front steps and walkway redone in bluestone and now the shutters need to be repainted a more suitable color. A friend suggested I migfht remove the shutters altogether. We also got new windows and the white trim is much more obvious then it was with the old windows. Do people paint the trim of new windows??? If so, what color scheme might work for my brick home? Thanks!!!

Thanks...had to figure out the whole HEIC/jpeg thing. Should be posted now!

I love the current color and think it should look good with bluestone as it seems to have a blue green undertone already.

Thanks! The front of my house has a northern exposure, so when the sun is over the house, the shutters look much less green than they do on winter mornings and sunny summer days...keep the shutters then?

Since you have to remove the shutters to paint, wait to see how you like the facade without them.

Don’t suggest painting the window trim, as you’ll then have to repaint periodically vs the vinyl. I’d paint the trim white (dental molding and around front door), as well as the garage doors. Suggest a blue door, which would look lovely with the bluestone and your brick. If keeping shutters, see below to get a sense of the outcome.

great suggestions... hadn't thought of painting the trim/garage doors white! And I love that blue. Also so nice to see a house similar to mine looking so fine without shutters. Much obliged!

I would not paint vinyl So the idea of the whitr trim makes sense and also ties the windows into the whole exterior

The pic without shutters has very prominent window trim. Yours doesn’t - keep the shutters.

You might want to test carefully removing one shutter to see how the brick behind it looks compared to the exposed brick. The exposed brick could be quite faded compared to the covered brick.

Vinyl windows can be painted but it’s not advisable for several reasons, maintenance, peeling, chipping & most concerning of all , it might void the warranty.

I like the shutters and I like the cream trim. I might go with a warm sage for the shutters.

“The pic without shutters has very prominent window trim.”

My thought after seeing Maureen’s first pic.

Wow! That was so helpful-THANK YOU!!!!!!! You know, as a result of all the creative tips here, I noticed that above and below my windows there is some brick work/detail that might serve as trim if painted, which could add the necessary visual interest if the shutters were removed... is that a thing?

Thanks to those images that show the house with no shutters, I think it looks a bit...naked? lol

No, do not paint the brick around the windows. I think it will look odd.

With your brick color I'd leave them and go dark

get away from the bright white trim too

    deeper browns

    or lighter

    don't forget to accessorize!

Lovely home. With your bright white new windows, and traditional hone, stick with tradition. Here are a few ideas. With your new windows, i would try removing the shutters completely. Do not paint the exterior of new windows.

Or go with black if you choose to keep shutters. Add authentic hardware to simulate true functional shutters.
