Another ice storm for the history book

last modified: last month

Forgive me for going off topic. We are in day 5 of no power. Estimates are that it may be 2-3 weeks before we have any. Only 41 houses in our entire county had power on Sunday. When is 1 inch greater than 100 feet? When the 1 inch is ice and the 100 feet is southern pine! My yard is a mess from downed trees and fallen limbs. One oak limb missed my bedroom window by 2 feet. We have community water and a recommisioned fireplace that has not seen a fire in 25 years. I have cooked by tea lights and candles. Tea lights are very effective!

I lived through the 1994 ice storm without power for 23 days. Of course we bought a generator then which we later sold! No generator for this one. Yet!

The community has taken it on themselves to clear roads. My driveway was impassable until I cut the limbs back. However I am thankful. Some people have it much worse. The entire city of Oxford and surrounding county have no water due to a water leak and there is limited power. Ole Miss students have joined together to go help neighborhoods clean up and check on elderly.

Please lift these areas up. The damage is unbelievable and a long recovery ahead. And please also remember the numerous linemen from several states who have come to help. One has already suffered a severe injury.

I was able to get out today to replenish supplies. I have limited phone service at my house and no internet. I will rejoin the group when able.

Sorry for the long narrative. My heart is hurting for this area and others suffering through this event.

Beautiful-just needs twinkle lights! Looking down my driveway. I cut all these

Pines behind my house. They look like tornado trees

Tea light soup

Candlelight chili

Oh my goodness Kate! I am speechless……hope you get through this with no more troubles and power is up soon. I have always thought ice is worse than snow, proof here.

sending positive vibes your way and some prayers.

I am surprised that this is not better covered in the national news. There was a segment on one family in Nashville that had a pipe freeze. Then a brief reference to the fact that a number of power outages remain, mainly in the South. If this happens in the Northeast, I am sure it will be better covered.

Heating chili with a candle--that would make a good news segment. Also, the students pitching in. I was thinking the other day, while braving the cold during dog walks, that I should be glad that there aren't power disruptions.

Thanks for the update, Kate, and I hope that this news is soon dated and that you are in a better situation. I hope too that your knee issues are abating.

Thanks guys. Headed home now with more batteries and other supplies. Cleaned out my refrigerator yesterday and my freezer will go tomorrow. That makes me sad. And yes, Mantis, I too was shocked at how little coverage this got when I looked at news today. I am not exaggerating when I say this is devastating. It truly does look like tornado damage. The power company internet lines are twisted and tangled and all are down. Fortunately I do not use their internet and it will be weeks before they can address that. Keep us in your thoughts!! Until next update, bring on spring!!!

Goodness what a mess your dealing with Kate. I have heard on the news where people in the south are still dealing with the storm and getting power back on. Good to know your have line people from other areas to work on the lines.

We did get the ice/sleet mix for several hours after the snow came through. No power outage. This is the biggest storm we've encountered since moving here. I was use to these type of storms in NYS but not here.

Sending prayers your way that the situation gets resolved quickly. Take care of yourself.

So sorry, Kate. It needs more coverage and obviously you need more help.

Kate - I feared that you might be in this situation. Friends in my old neighborhood in Nashville are going through the same thing. A couple got power restored late yesterday, but most still don't have electricity. The number of trees and power poles down is huge. Cooking with tea lights sounds stressful. I remember doing the same thing back in the ice storm of '94. I pray that you get lots of help dealing with the trees, and that your power will be back soon.

Update: Still no power. This is day 8.

Thanks for the positive thoughts. Looks like it be a while. Am posting pics of progress today-almost 31,000 customers and over 11,000 still without power. We now have a generator but came too late to save my freezer food. Still in survival mode!

As many of you know ice is the worst to deal with. Damage is so widespread. Pine trees are so prolific in our area and so quick to crack and tumble in ice. At a friend’s house in neighboring town getting a hot shower, the most highly sought after event!’

These are outages still around Oxford

And here is my area. I am in the top in the 351 area!!

A huge majestic pine along my drive hung on to some limbs!!

I will probably not be back on until we have power-hopefully before first bloom!! lol

I'm so sorry to hear you are still without power. My prayers continue to be with you and all the people who have suffered this winter. Be extra careful as the ice melts off trees and comes down............Maryl
