Garden Tales >>> February 2026

last modified: last month

Well, not much going on out there now due to the ongoing glacial situation. The collards are officially over and out, they are frozen solid and no recovery in sight. The young spinach has a nice blanket of ice thanks to last week's sleet storm followed up with a 1/4" of glaze. The temp hasn't risen above freezing for over a week, so the ice isn't going anywhere fast.

Below is a pic from this morning showing our well house light bulb reflecting off of the thick ice. It will warm up into the 30's this coming week so that should be a start of a thaw, I hope. Long range forecast shows colder than normal temps for at least 2 more weeks. The good news is that the fruit trees will remain dormant longer than usual, this may cause them to bloom later than normal and help save them from a late freeze in April. The bad news is that my pomegranate and figs trees might die back from these low temps, maybe a little or a lot. We'll see....
