Stone for Fireplace wall

last month

Hi everyone, so what do you think ? This is the split face ivory travertine that goes
with my floor
I love this look, , it gives us some texture ,we would be doing the entire 10’ wall along with the return on the side . Is it too
much?
I have attached my inspiration pic, I know it’s from 2012 , but I feel this is a very timeless look.
This is a 1500 lb addition which would be fully supported underneath with beams and a wall. I have not found anything else that I have liked as much as this stone.

Thank you, I was having a hard time getting my pictures to show , I will delete one.
    Thank you

I have added additional pictures , hoping this might help to see what the stone looks like .

Just to be clear, you will be adding the stone on the wall on the left side of the FP that returns to the drywall? I'm just a little confused since you have cement board added to the wall to the right of the FP.

Some people are ripping out that style of stacked stone veneer, so it is a dated look, but it is your house and no one can stop you if you like it!

Your inspiration photo has dark wood floors on the more used/visible family room side of the fireplace. I don't love the overall color of Travertine, so I wouldn't want to carry that same color tone up the walls.

The stone would be on all the cement board including the right side wall.
We haven’t been able to find anything else that would give this wall some texture. There is a dark kitchen in the same open concept room.. if anyone could suggest another material we definately would be open for suggestions.
The travertine is a beautiful floor with no pink or yellow in it. I’m sure my pictures are showing yellow

Just don't do a full wall of those stacked slivers!

Maybe just a surround with drywall space above for art.

Same Travertine material. I still wouldn't do the full wall.

Chispa thank you for your pics, we could eliminate some of the stone but where would the cut off point be.

Split face travertine tile is not the issue for this wall IMO. it's the ill-proportioned fireplace box. I'm sure you can a good reason to select this but IMO the size & proportions are terrible.

Thank you, unfortunately we had no choice,
We are thinking now that the stone maybe to much for this small room, we are thinking now to go 6’ high add a mantel and drywall the top that will butt up to the stone, also drywall the right side , no stone , there is a wood box going in on the right side

I think it's a good decision to not run the stone all the way up + over on the right wall.

When I look at your space - including your flat panel black kitchen cabinets - I feel like you should do something more contemporary (that type of split stone will look dated and out of place).

I would listen to chispa above + I would use something other than the a color that blends in with your travertine floor tilel.

There are many different types of slabs that would work - you can find really inexpensive pieces in a remnant section of a stone yard/fabricator. I've seen many "slab" fireplaces that were made using three pieces of slab (one across the top + one down each side) OR even out of LFT - like 24x48/24x24 - whatever size makes sense to have the least amount of seams + have seams located in a way that makes sense.

If you want to add texture - you could do a more contemporary look by making your FP in a style similar to the examples below:

There will be room above for a nice piece of art:

A bit more simple in design -

The next two photos show two travertine FP - there would be contrast with your floors + bring in a little black from the kitchen:

There are some pretty marbles + porcelain slabs (or LFTs) that would work with your floors + black kitchen without making this room dark (like some shown above - or you could go darker like the next two photos):

I wouldn't bring this all the way up - it's just an example of a type of slab/tile that could be used with any of the designs I've posted:

Below is a more simple black with some light veining - if you aren't running it up the wall, it wouldn't make the space feel dark.

Below is another way that you could design your FP - this was a DIY (everything except for the installation of the slab + inner edge detail around the firebox). I like the way that they added the wood surround + moulding detail above the FP. The surround provides the mantel vs. adding a different one. You wouldn't have to make a raised hearth (it could be even with the floor):

The above photo made me think of your space due to the smaller square firebox + a wider wall area (if you want to carry the FP the length of the back wall).

Dan_M08, thank you very much for the pictures and suggestions. I will try and post a better picture of the cabinets, they are an oak cabinet with a darker brown stain , not solid. There is veins running in the cabinet that is in the floor.
We had thought about running that same colour on the top of the fireplace but it’s just too much of the same in one space. We have this table coming up when we move in , all the furniture that is existing will be gone.

This table also isn’t black , it has an ebony stain on maple and we would be changing the chairs, it’s almost the same colour as the cabinets. So not sure how this is going yet. I think will leave the fireplace for last , so we can see what our space is going to look like .

I like the look of split-face travertine — the texture can add a lot of character. The only thing I’d think about is scale. The room isn’t very large and the ceilings aren’t especially high, so a full 10’ wall plus the return might feel a bit heavy.

Keep in mind that split-face stone tends to collect dust in the crevices and needs regular cleaning.

I'm concerned about using so much of the same stone. Notice on your inspiration photo that there is some contrast between the flooring and fireplace wall.

Not so fond of the look of the stone on the inspiration photo. It unfortunately does look dated. I do think I am in agreement with others that a full stone wall might be overkill. I do like some of the fireplace surrounds that have been posted. Am also in agreement that leaving space for artwork is a good idea.

Thank you everyone, im so glad i posted my project, as much as i like the Split Face look, it would take over the entire room, it would have to be maintained as it is a working wood fireplace and it would get dirty . My husband is relieved since he no longer needs to add structure support to carry the weight of the stone.

With all the great pictures and suggestions that have been provided we have decided not use the split face and will go for a more contemporary look on this wall, possibly adding a mantel to break the wall up . We are going to leave this project and come back to it once we have moved here full time and some of the other projects in this room are completed.

I will come back once we get there!

You say that al your existing furniture is being replaced. I think I would hold off on finishing the fireplace until you have your new furnishings in. You might find that your current firplace design would clash with your new furnishings.

Susan49417 thank you, yes we wont be replacing any furniture until we move there and see how much space we will have. We have furniture in our existing rental that will go there for now. The reason we needed to know if we were using the split face was to determine what we would need to do to carry the weight and who we would need to have come in and tell us what type of bracing/support we would need in the basement ceiling . So now we don't need to make this decision now.
