Need help deciding on wall paint color. Japandi interior.

last month

Repainting my apartment (8ft ceilings, South-facing windows). It’s currently Benjamin Moore White Dove, and I’m looking for something noticeably warmer and different (so I get my moneys worth) that still fits a Japandi aesthetic.

Swiss Coffee is frequently recommended, but I’m concerned it may read too yellow or feminine. Is that a valid concern, and are there better alternatives?

Please note, my second bedroom (office) will be October Mist by Benjamin Moore. Need to repaint Living Room, Master Bedroom, 2 bathrooms, and Kitchen, and Ceiling.

Please see attached photo for a Japandi interior reference of interior pieces, neutral colors.

    Hi,

    I go for a textured wall to create that zen yet interesting look. A beige, matte venitian plaster kind of effect.

    I just helped my niece pick colors for her home and her favorite "colors" are blues and greens. October Mist lightened by 25% was the green we selected. Her blues were Wedgewood Gray (blue green) and Labrador Blue) Her two neutrals were Edgecomb Gray and Swiss Coffee with White Heron trim. Obviously the kids rooms are a bit off the overall palette, but they are kids and wanted pink and purple bedrooms. Neither of the neutrals are overly yellow.

    Thanks for sharing. I'll take a careful look at Edgecomb Gray for my walls instead. If you have any photos of completed spaces using this color, I’d appreciate you sharing them.

    My daughter's house has walls in White Dove. They appear as a light cream/beige.

    Have you examined your lighting? If you have LED's, make sure they are 2700 degrees Kelvin (soft/warm white. You also might look at lowering ambient light levels with lower wattage bulbs or dimmers.

    You might be surprised at the results, and save some money.

    Yes, I already have White Dove on my walls with a few 2000K paper lamps. It's nice. But my ceiling and walls need repairs from water damage so I'm repainting the whole condo. I want something noticeably different, but similar vibe. I think Edgecomb Grey, or Swiss Coffee, may be a contender but I'm still deciding. I didn't think it would be this difficult to choose.

    Water damage puts things in a different light.

    Another thing to consider is LRV (light reflectance value) of a paint. The few Japandi examples I have seen appear to be fairly bright.

    Might be time for paint samples and poster boards.

    What an impressive space. Thanks for sharing. Seapearl is added on my list now.

    @Little Bird Sorry to ask, is the color of your trim and ceiling also in Seapearl in those photos? But a different finish?

    Currently I have:

    walls--> Matte

    trim --> Satin

    ceilings --> Ultra Flat

    Hi Ouzzhyen. Yes, the walls are BM aura matte, the trim is satin, and the ceiling is the same color at 15% in flat. Even though it’s the same color for trim, it appears a little lighter because of the satin sheen. If you do the ceiling at 100%, it will appear darker because it’s of the flat paint. Probably at 50% it would look the same as the walls. But my basement is very dark and only 7.5 feet high, so I did it lighter to make it seem more open. Here’s another view of the sitting room. The paint store told me that mixing in some cooler colors in with the wood and creamy carpet color would help balance and bring out those warm tones, so we added touches of gray. I’m especially proud of this custom-looking closet that I assembled from Ikea shelves. All the wall frames are also Ikea. The view down the stairs used to look like you were heading down a dungeon, but I think the sea pearl paint and wall frames make it seem more inviting. So you don’t have to spend a fortune on everything to make a beautiful space, if you’re willing to measure carefully and use a little creativity. I’m looking forward to seeing how your space turns out!

    Typo - I meant the ceiling is at 25%, not 15

    Oh, also in the photo of the stairs - see how the sloped ceiling appears darker? It’s actually painted the same matte at 100% as the walls. In the stairwell I wanted to highlight the light at the bottom of the steps to imply that there’s something wonderful at the end of the stairs

    Thanks again for sharing. Your space is amazing, especially considering that’s just the basement. And I appreciate the heads up on the flat ceiling looking darker. I totally forgot about that and will keep it in mind.
