If it's making a "slipping" sound...check the belt under the washer.

Call the repairman!

If not the belt, then possibly an issue with the mode shifter and/or the spring/clutch mechanism.

I had this happen to a top load Whirlpool washer + so did my sister. Both times it was an issue with the lid switch. It's a safety feature - the lid has to be down for that cycle. There is a piece on the lid that fits into where the lids switch is located and pushes it down = confirms lid is in closed position. They are inexpensive + easy to replace. I hadn't ever fix an appliance before (I'm an attorney - the only diy stuff I've done around my house is that I've painted rooms). My understanding is that this is a common issue.

If you washer is not working then you need to check the belt inside the machine sometimes belt can break after 3 to 4 months.
