Any ideas on what to do with this space?

EDITS based on others' thoughtful responses:

for those of you wanting the full photo of the living room... just posted to help you give an idea a bit more. The TV isn't our main watching area but we are planning on having it so it can be viewed all the way from the dining room, which is quite a bit distance away.

The sofa, an L sized one, the furthest part is about 15-17 ft from the fireplace. I too also thought about putting a tv under the Juliet balcony, but unsure if we have enough room as it is 54" height and then defeats purpose of being able to see the tv from other parts of the house.

Behind the Juliet balcony is a soundproof music room being turned into a library. Dining room is on the other side of the catwalk but is open to the living. Juliet balcony is staying no matter what but we are changing it to black doors and could be open to a different type of balcony style. Hope this helps. Thank you these suggestions are great!

Hi all, wanted to see if anyone had suggestions on what to do with this alcove in our living room, which currently sits underneath the juliet balcony, which is staying, We had open shelving there, but it felt too bulky and wanted something more minimalist. Let me know if you all have ideas? dimension is 61.5"w *18"d*54"h

I thought about cabinetry that curves with the balcony, but curved doors are out of our budget. Thanks in advance for any help!

Also, if anyone wants to chime in on fireplace as well, and what to do there, it would be greatly appreciated. We are planning to put a TV over the fireplace, but unsure what to do with tiling/stone etc. :)

birds eye view layout prior. We didn't like the built ins.

Is this a living room? hallway? TV room? if you can give context, we can get creative.

I would make it enclosed shelving doors and trim in white.

This is a living room and we are planning to have a frame tv over the fireplace.

@Missy Bee would you enclose the whole thing? it feels a bit chunky, but maybe that's okay?

I'd put the tv there instead of over the fireplace. It'd be too high there IMO.

You could mount a wall hung shelf and then add the TV inside the niche.

If you place the TV over the fireplace the proportions on the wall get wonky.

I would drywall over it unless you need additional storage, in that case an enclosed cabinet. Also, dimensions would be helpful, especially for those suggesting a TV ( looks too small to me, but I may be wrong ).

I would enclose the whole thing as storage but if you want to make it disappear, you might try painting it same color as walls….so still a beautiful built in but but less prominent.

I do like Beverly’s idea because I think watching tv over the fireplace is an uncomfortable viewing angle. You can still have the outlet under the art for any future owners or a change in preference.

Seems very high for watching TV if hung above the fireplace. If the seating arrangement allows it (we cannot see the entire room), I would place the TV with a floating cabinet in the nook under the railing.

It would be interesting to know what is on the other side of the french doors on the Juliette balcony?

@aunthelma, it is a living room and is very open. It will only be used sparingly as a tv room, but we would like a tv there as we don't really want guests in the basement where the tv usually is. We are thinking of putting a frame tv there.

@lisedv, I thought about the TV under the juliet balcony as well, but I don't think we have enough space.

    @Striddy Huene

    Hard to tell without dimensions.

@lisedv dimensions for the alcove is 61.5"w *18"d*54"h. I wonder, could I get away with a lower fireplace so I can move the TV down or will it look too small?

In the picture the alcove looks bigger than the fireplace wall as far as TV size. It seems it could fit a 65" in the alcove-what size are you thinking?

A lower fireplace? Fireplace boxes come in standard sizes. The only ones that are shorter in height are longer in length.

Generally speaking, that corner looks too busy to me…with the added problem of all the features competing with each other…not matching…

A view of the rest of the room could offer other ..more suitable options…

Why don't you simply drywall that nook

@lisedv We need some sort of built in for TV equipment. I definitely suggested this as well but was shot down.

Having the tv in the built in is an option. It's not our favorite option as you can't see it from the dining space. I can mull on that a bit more.

Perhaps if you post a floor plan showing all dimensions including windows, doors, entrance to the room and describe your needs for furniture some of us would be able to offer more suggestions.

Could be good to not have opportunity to watch tv during family dining times….

over the fireplace is much too high for comfortable TV viewing, especially so close.

The box looks like a great spot for a TV.

I'd paint it dark to mimic the firebox and hang a very tall vertical piece of art over the mantel to draw your eye up. Tall rod at the ceiling for a long lean look to the window coverings too.
