kitchen layout advice & where to put the trash

I’m remodeling a home and need advice where to put the trash pull out.
We’re planning on having the main sink centered in front of the window and a 18”x18” square prep sink in the island (currently marked in the photo as an oval), and 2 dishwashers.
I marked in green 1,2,3 for locations I’m considering for the trash. Open to other suggestions too.
Thanks for any advice!

Think about your current kitchen. Is the trash inconvenient now? Do you find yourself wishing ”if only there were a trash can/recycle bin/compost bucket right here or there? And they don’t all have to be in the same place!

I would put the trash pull-out right next to your main sink - especially assuming that is the only sink that will have a disposal? And assume that is one of the two dishwashers on the other side of the main sink under the window? So I would go with your option #1. That puts all the critical cleanup in one place! And get a 2-bin pullout - one bin for garbage stuff like meat bones, etc., the other for recyclables.

I was advised (by several designers) to put the Trash right next to the dishwasher (scrape dishes, then put in dishwasher). However, I'm putting the Trash at the end of the cabinet run because it's the only Trash can on the first floor and we often go in the kitchen JUST to throw something away. It wasn't a major change as there is now only a drawer stack in-between. I agree with those that have suggested that you think about your kitchen routines to see what suits you best.

@michelleG do you mean sink, then dishwasher, then trash? Or trash on one side of the sink and dw on the other side of the s

Either way works. How do YOU usually process your dishes/trash? Which configuration matches your method? I guess my point was to simply consider how YOU work within your kitchen and set it up to match. I hope that makes sense.

I would put it in position 2 beacuse then it is convenient to the prep sink, clean up sink and the 2 dishwashers. It works there for any prep scraps and you can scrape plates and plop them right in the dishwasher. That is where my trash is except my kitchen is u shaped and the cleanup sink is across from the trash pullout on the shorter arm of the U not on the back row of cabinets.

We recently remodeled and were able to use a trash pullout under our kitchen sink cabinets. It fits perfectly on one side and saves using a whole cabinet just for trash and is very convenient
Revashelf makes many options and sizes

You could have a trash receptacle in more than one place, just as you have two dishwashers.

    Other comments -

Is the window size or location "set in stone"? Or, can you move it or make it bigger? (Bigger would be better!)

Ideally, it would be much better to put the DW on the other side of the sink (position #1). Why?

    1. It removes it from b/w the sink and range so if you have someone helping you and they're prepping in that location, the DW won't be in the way.
    2. More importantly, it would remove the DW from the work aisle b/w the island and range so an open DW isn't an obstacle to dodge (think of having a pot of boiling pasta water that needs to be drained - you don't want to trip over or have to dodge an open DW door).
    3. If your aisle is 54" or so, it may mitigate the second issue to some extent b/c you would have room to walk b/w the island and open DW door. [Note that aisles are measured to/from the items sticking out into them the farthest - counter overhangs, appliance handles, etc. They are not measured to/from cabinets as cabinet representations only include the depth of the box, they do not include doors/drawer fronts or the 1.5" counter overhang above them.]

(If you don't mind not having the sink centered under the window, you could just move it to right enough to fit the DW. Most people don't like it even though with under-mount sinks it's not as big an issue, especially if you center the faucet on the window. Maybe align it with the right side of the window so it appears deliberate?)

Thank you, Buehl!!!! The window cannot be moved due to the an electrical box outside directly next to the window.

That main sink at the window is going to be a white apron-front sink with a center drain... do you think that will make it look too off? Would it help anything if I got a 36 inch apron front sink in a 39 inch sink cabinet instead? Or how can I make this look better? Overall, the design would help with making the nook space more usable and could remove the banquette cabinet seat at the end (top right of the drawing in the post).

    Thanks for your detailed help.
