Please help with visual ideas for black floor. Really need rug ideas!

last modified: last month

Black bamboo floors, black built ins, Khaki walls with fuschia accent wall. I need color ideas for area rug, sofa and love seat or sectional. Taste trend toward comfortable contemporary. Just getting back to my family room project. All seating to be replaced. Thinking of Black leather recliner and Taupe sofa and loveseat. Olive green window seat can be reupholstered but I prefer not to. Accent wall has to be bold because of steel art, which is staying. Rug needs to be replaced in both areas. Ideas please. Love the taupe/dove color. I pulled the dark purple and green for pillows?

My crystal ball is broken . How can we possibly help with so little info. It sounds awful to me so I need pictures of the whole space . That color palette posted is odd to say the least . I happen to like blck floors not the upkeep but the look so I am pretty open minded but this is past that for me. I need to see the room in real life not some AI idea

Skip!!! please the fuschia accent wall . Start from the non amateur beginning: )

Put the fuschia in art, pillows and don't get carried away. It's a "red" and red advances to your eye. It does that in fabric, in art, in clothing, and is the color you see first.

Small doses of the color will make you notice it yet more as we see color by comparison. It will be the jolt, in even small accents.

What do you first see down below?

Frankly? Skip the khaki............. paint the walls black or use a grass cloth in black .Add white......

A little goes a long way..

The black floor is very tricky. You would see any spec on it all the time!

Suggest testing scenarios in ChatGBT, as there are too many combos to be able to give advice. If it were me, I‘d first decide on the design/color of the seating as it will have the biggest influence. Another option is to find large, impactful art and then decide how/where the colors can be incorporated. If don’t have a jumping off point, pulling the room together will be difficult.

Thanks for the photos, nice room. You have not commented on any suggestions BUT...

I STILL like my renderings posted with pale coral as the only accent color. No blue, burgundy, fuschia, gray, purple, yellow or green accent colors. They all fight with the wall IMO.

You need a large art on the accent wall as suggested to tie in the colors. To me, the silver art pieces you have in a row do not do it for the space.

The carpet is too yellow with that wall. The sofas and chair are nice and neutral but you don't need to add more gray. Again, I'm referencing back to my inspiration photos above which I think work nicely.

You have two pale green dining chairs with a yellow rug, which I think are okay in the separate space. The green boat on the bar is distracting IMO. The blue orb is distracting.

The fuscia wall is doesn't belong. It is an accent color, and that isn't an accent wall. What I do like is the black floors. Even though it looks to be an open floor plan, luckily, there is trim to determine what area is what. In this photo, notice how the sofa is out of the living area, encroaching into kitchen space.

Suggestion is what I would do, of course. I would paint the walls black....just in that living space. I like this color scheme for you. Black, is the primary color.

Green for the sofa; rather than fuscia, go softer coral for rug

    @jiglove, hello?

Here's the dilemma. The furniture arrangement has to stay as under the windows attached to the shelving is a long window seat. Very large room so the the loveseat doesn't really encroach on the kitchen. I am replacing the sofa, loveseat and rug. I am not going to paint any wall black. Just too dark for me with the floor. Dining room rug will be replaced as well and eventually the chairs. Since I am replacing most of the seating I would like to change from grey. Thoughts?

I dislike unmatched sofas always . IMO no more black for furniture with black floors. The fushia wall no way. Waht is the problem with the furniture you have? I like the eames maybe one more no reclinging furniture other than the Eames cairs and matching 3 seater sofas . As for accent wall that comes last when allother itmes are chosen including art .The steel art is hard to see but does not require that fushia color , I would do green sofas and a much less in your face accent color for rug and maybe an accent wall. Pillows with a touch of fushia perfect.Nice space do not bury it in poor choices .

If I were assisting you with picking the right colors for your home I would start with learning about your color preferences and finding a fabulous piece of art for the wall that you colored with fuchsia.

Then I would look for an area rug that complemented the art.

Then, depending on the art and area rug colors I would choose furniture.

I have to agree about the pink wall. I think there are better options. (I love the deep velvet sofa that Maureen posted)

right now, that yellow rug is throwing off everything in the room. It does not work. Plus, everything in there is solid.

Your fan blades are too short for the size of the room to do any actual cooling. If you're going to stay w/the fan/light, get longer blades. at least 60"

first thing I thought of was a wood slat wall (diff options for this too, c below) and I'd redo the actual fireplace surround in black. either a tile, a marble,

Here's a close up of the one I photo shopped:

The fluted wall slats like this come in panels that are ready to install. or you can DIY your own.

and, another photo shop w/the black slats, the black surround, new light, and animal print rug and a luscious brown velvet sofa.

I like this for the fireplace surround too. (or, redo the pink wall like this)

some other surround ideas instead of the white:

black w/natural wood and leather, charcoal sofa, some greenery, looks so good.

I love this w/the all of the wood trim work.

a nice leather looks great w/black

    same room diff accessories

another option for the wall or the surround, planks

Love this w/the wood console and natural elements

more natural elements w/the neutral sofa/rug

Instead of the bright pink, this is a nice eye-catching element. (especially if using all natural color elements or leather)

from your other view. again w/the black surround. a Loloi rug, natural wood/black table.

here's the whole area with that rug.

On your pink wall, if you do it black (or even in white) you could do a gallery accent display.

another DIY you can do on the fireplace surround is a black plaster or roman clay application.

you could even do a stone veneer of some sort

when choosing rugs, stay away from the polypropolene options. they're cheap because they look cheap.

I like Loloi. ChrislovesJulia has their own line. nice options.

I really like your floors and the black wall idea. You have enough light to carry it off

a few examples w/the organic designs

dark floors w/a brighter white wall

Thank you for all your comments. As I progress I am leaning towards a taupe velvet sofa loveseat. Rug will be replaced with a dark option (black, taupe, with texture). We have a dog and a cat so the rug needs some depth. Eames is going (not comfortable and damaged) and we need the seating. It will be replaced with black leather chair. Will keep the olive window seat till everything else is done. I think I like the idea of putting wood on the fuschia wall. Don't know if you can tell in the pics but there is a large black credenza in front of that wall. I have very simple tastes - clean lines, not so much into patterns, and colors I love are almost always cool.

Forgot to mention that I started looking for lighter grey perfomance velvet for replacement sofas . Impossible to find a medium to light shade that was somewhat matte. So that is why I'm considering the taupe family.
