Cheap but decent window shades/blinds

last month

Oldest DS just signed an offer on a condo. Fingers crossed. All windows are nekkid so the first task would be covering them simply and inexpensively. What would you do and where would you buy? I’m thinking probably Home Depot?

The whole building was just renovated so fortunately not much else needs to be done.

We love the Levolor cut to order Cellular shades. They are extremely good quality. DH has had them in his office for over 5 years and they look new. We got them at Lowes .

Can confirm that Budget Blinds is not; no other help here sorry.

    Congrats to him!

Sometimes the cut to fit can work but if not, track the Levolor, Bali, Allen Roth sales at Lowe's for the 30% off custom. While waiting, the temporary, self stick pleated paper shades work really well for peanuts - depending on the size needed, there's a 6 pack on A for $30.

I got these very inexpensive cellular shades for a few bedroom windows years ago. They're very simple but I was surprised by the quality. They're still on the windows under curtains. I like the filtered light. I do not like blackout but I think they come in blackout too.

@mtnrdredux_gw agree with you about Budget Blinds. I was staggered when I called them and they came and measured and wanted $450 per window on the smallest windows in the house! They are insane.

Try Blinds.com house brand, catching a sale. Costco has good prices on Bali, you should at least price them out. They were cheaper than the same Bali on Blinds.com. Think through if any should be blackout, ie, bedroom. Exciting!

Trail, I was too lazy and impatient so I went with them. I just think they need a name change.

Check twopagescurtains.com and see if anything they offer might fit the bill.

@mtnrdredux_gw ah well I was furious, a very deceptive advertising method.

I got custom made roller blinds for every single window in my house from

a woman and her husband in Oregon. She was excellent and her husbands work was perfect. Avg cost per window was $80-90 a piece. She unfortunately fell ill and stopped communicating and closed her business. She had a very large portfolio of homes and they were terrific.

All our windows have JCPenney blinds, so I would recommend looking there. Of course, I have no idea if they are as good as they used to be, but they were good blinds for a decent price. You could order the width and sometimes the length, or with ours I had to shorten them manually. Or else I'd try Lowe's or HD.

I've varied it between HD and Lowe's for the blinds off the shelf and they've been great.

We have had luck with Blindsters.

Certainly check Lowes and Home Depot.

That’s funny, I have Budget Blinds throughout my house. You’re right, the ”budget” part is laughable but I will say mine have held up great and customer service was excellent. I definitelt didn’t pay $400/window for mine, but it was almost 8 years ago so who knows what they’d cost now.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Definitely will do the paper shades as needed! Knowing him, he’ll probably keep them up for a year.

I bought cheap cellular shades when I first built my house (2021) and by the fall of 2023 the ones that got a lot of sun were failing. I bought Levolor shades to replace them--MUCH more expensive--but I expect them to outlast me.

I just but blinds for the condo we bought. Like your DS’s place all windows were bare and so it was fairly urgent. I priced a few places and went with Blinds.com. I have used them before also. Great customer service.

I am another one who had insanely good luck at JCPenney. I bought a whole house full of real wood blinds ~10 years ago through them. Impressed with their quality as every one is still in use and fine. Some minor warping on the 2 inch ones- but they are wood and so I accept that can happen.

Definitely get the "disposable" pleated shades from HD or Lowes. They can easily be cut with a utility knife to the correct width. They stick to the top of the window frame or trim. They come in opaque or room darkening material.

They work great until he is ready to spend the money on permanent window treatments.

My local Budget Blind quote for Hunter Douglas shades for the whole house was 30% more than that of another HD dealer in the same area. Crazy!

For permanent, someone I follow on FB really likes the Graeber blinds through Costco. They have sales all the time. They do come out to measure, but I don't think they install. Maybe they do and she just pays her handyman cheaper?? She did them one or two at a time when she saved up the money for them.

We have gorgeous blinds from The Shade Store througout our home. But when we purchased a second home, I didn't want to spend as much. I looked high and low and ended up with Lowe's cellular shades. They are really good quality. Easy enough that even I could install them, which is really saying something. Lowe's will custom cut them to your desired length in the store. They come in a few different colors.

A couple of months ago I got a really nice cellular shade from blinds dot com. It was super easy to install myself, just a couple of screws. I got bottom up but wish I'd gotten bottom up/top down. I was afraid they'd be more complicated to install but I don't think so. I measured carefully and it was sized perfectly.

I like wide open windows so I'm not big into window coverings as decor. But I needed something for a street-facing guestroom but not blackout.

I also bought shades from JCPenney. Bought them many years ago and am very happy with them.

I also used Blinds.com. Two years ago, I bought light filtering cellular shades for 5 windows (roughly 5' x 2') for a total of about $600. I have been super happy with the quality, and the customer service was great. I ordered samples to determine the exact color I wanted, and then ordered for a single window to check quality/fit/ease of installation, before doing the complete order. (Yes, I guess I have trust issues!)

They are constantly having sales up to 50% off. In fact, I placed my original order during a 50% off sale. The sale had ended by the time I wanted to complete my order. I called and asked if I could get the sale price, and they agreed! I think there are so many companies competing in the blinds business, that they were just happy to make the sale.

Congrats to your son! My youngest bought a small zero lot line home and is so glad he did --rents have doubled since he did. And I'm sure he will love not moving so often.,

When my sister redid her former home for resale, we put up simple white mini-blinds in all the rooms that required privacy. I think we bought them at Lowes. Not terribly exciting, but they do the job, were inexpensive, looked clean and nice and new owner could easily hang curtains or shades in front of them for options. They didn't cost much more than the paper temp shade, they offer a lot more functionality and you don't have to worry about replacing before they fall down. I don't remember who, but I know I had a friend who talked about rehanging or replacng torm paper temp shades a number of times before they got more permanent window treatments. .
