last month

Need help selecting coffee table. Thinking chunky wood top similar to mantel? Black legs? Not clash with grey tv console? Pic of existing end table I could use.

    Opinions on any of these?

    Or this one?

I like coffee table that are oval or rounded and a base the doesn’t stick out so I don’t hit my legs with the corner or trip on the legs/feet. Just something to think about.

    Definitely!

Remove mantel, as it is not behaving as a mantel. Maybe you can find another use for it..

Art over fire box.: etsy downloadable print.

Tones of rug, black frame to compliment black rug edging.

Deidre Adams you are on the wrong track with thinking you should select something in the cclor range of the mantle. All your selections are too brutal in design and heavily contrast your furnishings.

If you want more of your guests to reach the coffee table then a square table would be a better choice for size and shape.

Thanks, just trying to bring some warmth to room. Each of the chairs will have a side table so no need to reach coffee table; also think square table would block foot traffic to other rooms.

Beverly, can you elaborate on what you mean by brutal?

that mantle does not belong with the low narrow rectangular fireplace. a large piece of art over the fireplace and a wood hearth just underneath the fireplace will look so much better.
a round coffee table will draw the seating together more cohesively than a rectangular or square coffee table

Suggest adding warmth with cushions and art vs using tables that don’t suit.

You mentioned adding a table next to each chair; I’d hold off until the coffee table is in place as I think the space might feel cluttered. Try moving the chair on right over to the left a bit and try your small table on the other chair’s right (when seated).

Regarding a decent walk through, tape out different table shapes and sizes, which will also help you envision the overall effect on room and I think black would be a good choice.

Deidre Adams, I'm not Beverly, but the answer to your question about "brutal" is that the design term is actually brutalist. Do web searches on brutalist movement, brutalist architecture, and brutalist furniture to learn more.

In this case, another word for many of the suggestions so far might be "chunky" or "heavy-looking."

I don't think you need a coffee table, especially if you're concerned about traffic pattern. Side tables are fine. You might consider matching side tables or ottomans on either side of your couch. If you don't keep table lamps on them, you can bring them together in front of the couch whenever that would be more convenient for you and/or guests.

I use three stools that are kinda-sorta like this one, and rest trays on top except when I need the stools for more seating.

Two jobs I did for two of my clients

I have this on the other side (dining area) of the fireplace wall.

No to that pine chunky wood table. in fact, take a picture that shows the entire fireplace area and I could help w/that too.

A larger table is needed and push the chairs in just a little bit toward the center

you need a tad more life to the room. Look at these spaces and try to add some other accessories.

Wayfair has a lot of options.

any of these tables could also work

Beth H., don’t think I have room for square or round but do like your recommendations. How about this one? https://www.potterybarn.com/products/tanner-coffee-table/?sku=5255153
pretty much same size as current.
As you requested, here’s another pic of fireplace wall, too.

Lyn Nielsen, Love that coffee table; went to PB today and almost ordered but it’s 60” long; sofa only 78 so afraid it’s too long. Thanks though!

    This one?

measure out 48" X 24" with painters tape and see how it looks

as for the fireplace, what would you think about jazzing it up a bit?

tile, plaster, a longer mantle, diff art, any or all?

There's a huge sapce between the wood and the firebox that doesn't look proportional.

what if you tried something like this

Some tile on the lower half?

Or, tile the entire thing up to the top.

the mortar washed stone is also a nice choice. this fireplace is very similar to yours.

Have you considered placing the sofa facing the television instead of facing the FP? Honestly, how often do you watch the fire and how often do you watch TV?

  • last month

Yes, that’s the coffee table I’m considering and the size is fine. Just asking for opinion on selection. The 60” long one was recommended by another respondent. As for the fireplace wall, love your suggestions but not making any structural changes at this time. Have been looking at different artwork though. Thank you very much!

tape out 60" along side your sofa and see how it looks

Jennifer, yes I have. Never even use the fireplace! Considered swapping sofa with wing chair/ottoman and leaving swivel chair where it is but thought that would cut up room. Can’t really put sofa against wall either since that wall not long enough, in opening & has barn door (ugh!) that opens there. Here’s pic. It’s really a strange room.. Also considering etagere or bench/tall plant there.(Excuse rug; just replaced.)

Could you provide a floorplan of the space with the doors, windows . . . so we can see the amount of space were looking at. I think you could flip the carpet and let the sofa face the TV with a walkway behind the sofa, but I am having a hard time envisoning the entire room . Not sure we even have a pic of the wall across from the fireplace.

  • last month

Sorry, I don’t have a floor plan & realize it’s difficult to visualize. But the sofa which has windows behind it & double doors on both sides is across from the fireplace. If you’re sitting on the sofa, the tv console wall is to your left and the pic I just posted to your right. On both sides of fireplace wall are open walkways. But I’ll try to sketch something when I have time. Thanks again for all the comments.

The table looks okay that way but have you ever tried turning it the long way toward the fireplace?

  • last month

Since you don't use the fireplace:

I used your existing table (although it's perhaps a bit more rustic than the rest of the room) and existing mantel decor (minus one topiary for a bit more breathing room), added a couple of floor lamps and something non-rectangular (not necessarily birds) in the empty wall space between fireplace and mantel.
