Is my kitchen island too big for my space?

last month

I just recently renovated my kitchen by adding this quartz island. I had asked for 6ft in length, including a 10” overhang. There was some communication, and I ended up with a total length of 7 ft and a 10” overhang on the right side. My issue is that with seating on the right side, there is only 24” clearance to the cabinets. Also, I only have about 25” clearance from the fridge to the island. I really want to change the entire island placement and measurement.

    Most definitely, yes.

Unfortunately, it looks like your island has created issues with your aisles - do you have measurements for all of the aisles around your island?

Also, how did the miscommunication occur? Hopefully, you will be able to have the countertop removed and fabricated into a smaller piece + reconfigure the cabinets.

Do you have a scaled drawing of your kitchen showing the dimensions for all walls/doorways/doors/windows? This drawing would allow people to help you locate and size your island correctly for your space.

Lastly, 10" overhang seems small for seating. My current island has 12" overhang - I'm thinking about increasing it to 15" for my new one.

you are correct your island is way too large and you don’t have enough clearance.

can you share a floorplan of the kitchen? Yes the length is too long for the space - always need a minimum of 36" between the island and any obstacle, but it is quite likely that it is long and wide for the space that you have based on what I am seeing and if that is a cooktop in the island it is really shy of landing space on either side of the cooktop.

Agree with expanding the aisles by cutting down the island - the counter overhang on the sink side seems larger than necessary - wonder if the countertop folks didn’t place the slab correctly

With the cooktop on the island end, will cutting down the width give you enough space on the side for utensils, prep bowls, etc?

It does look very large but hard to tell exactly from you picture. Post a floor plan of your kitchen with dimensions so that we can see the dimensions of the space around the island.

It is both too large and too small. The island is too large for the space and creates a real pinch point at 24". But the space on either side of the range looks too small as does a 10" overhang.

Island is way too large and the cooktop should have not been placed on the island with no hood.

Thank you all for your comments. I realized the island is too large for the space. I'm talking to the fabricator to change it. You can't really see it in the picture but there is a under vent that comes up over the stove.

The fabricator of the top? What will you do about the cooktop. which appears centered on the top, not on the island cabinets?

What about where the perimeter cabinets to the left of the sink angle over, what is that distance to the island?

Have you tested out sitting at that 10" overhang and trying to eat just to see how it feels? Perhaps in the revamp you want to adjust the overhang amount.

    You did a reno...

Where is the flat on paper plan for that kitchen? I am talking about the cabinet/appliance.flat on paper plan, that you signed before a cabinet order was placed.

Who created the plan? A cabinet shop?

    Brutal truth,?

I care not what you "wanted". The plan was awful from the get go. You needed a RANGE on the wall where the double ovens are located, this kitchen has no room for ANY island. If you needed a second oven? It should have gone right of the fridge and we can not see that side of the kitchen.

Aisle clearances: ( barest minimum,) and nowhere near perfection or real comfort.

Not less than 48 behind stools at a counter.

Not less than 42 dishwasher to island

Not less than 42 range to island, and same for fridge.

I don't understand the "miscommunication", The island base had to be in place prior to any top and prior to any template for that top, and no idea where you were when the base cabinets were placed in the room

I will hope you have flooring beneath, but the original mistake is the layout, the appliance location, and in a reno, a cabinet seller simply replaced what was there, or listened to you and even the original desired size did not belong in the space

Wah and double wah. and a FAIL, and a very expensive mistake.

I'll stand back for the screaming that results from my post. It's nothing but truth, and I am sorry ANYONE let the poor design happen to you.

Not every kitchen is meant to have an island, and not every kitchen should have the island.

Show the original cabinet plan. The 2 dimensional. Not the elevation.

    This, in spades ^^^^

where the angle starts to left of sink you could re use the island cabinets perhaps ..continue the angle around and swing a narrower peninsula in direction of double ovens . This Leaves everything else intact... reuse the island drawers and shift the cooktop onto this "wing' ..... a bit of work but less than re-doing the entire kitchen.

Get graph paper and with island cabinet sizes you have, see what fits. your kitchen is problematic but use it , and think over the options. .

Since you're talking to the fabricator to change it - consider turning the cooktop around to face the sink. It looks strange in it's current location.

You might want to look into rangetop's that slide into an island - as well.

As long as the fridge and oven doors clear the island, I would not change it. You will end up using the entire surface I'm sure. Also, no one will be seated at all times anyway.

Without an actual to scale floor plan who knows The pictures tell me the island is way too big for the space as it is so yes to having it cut down but we hve no way to know how big you can go.10" over hang okay for kids but reallt 12" is the min. Walkways bigger better and just being able to open the fridge is not better only really bad design.THis space was one where a nice range with maybe a double oven was needed too.
