Kitchen cabinet height

I need advice on cabinet height for kitchen. We’re taking down the floating shelves and adding upper cabinets on either side of hood. The ceiling height is 9’, hood width is 3’, the countertop is 129.5”. Adjacent wall cabinets stop 12” from ceiling.
What looks best: taking new cabinets to ceiling or stopping 12” short like the adjacent upper cabinets? 35” or 42” upper cabinets on either side of hood?

Match the height of the pantry white wall adjacent to the cooktop area.

Are you at all interested in removing the soffit? Because now’s the time to do it. I too would vote you go to the ceiling, but i’d prefer the ceiling to be all one height. As you are getting new upper cabinets you could get new doors for the existing short cabinets that would visually take them to the ceiling as well.

its a good thing to ponder. the "tray" ceiling is an architectural detail. cabinets can be extended or not..OR more trim at the top of cabs can be added.

1st pic ..generous trim in a more traditional style.....2nd pic shows mixing it up w some cabs w a bit of trim and other cabinets extended [above fridge]..in your space I'd add some trim to existing cabs and then match that for the new.

Thanks for all the comments. We’ll take the cabinets to the ceiling. Agree that it will make the wall look more finished :)

What are you going to do about all the tile behind the floating shelves? Rip it all out? Replace it with something else as a backsplash?

The big white pantry in the corner throws everything off. Any chance of removing it and going with a custom piece to fill the corner and give you the storage you need?

We’re replacing the tile, possibly going with shades of cream/ivory zellige. Removing the pantry isn’t an option at this point.

shady willow makes a good point. before i did any of this I'd get a quote to remove the pantry. by far the best bang for the buck.....you should consider it.

I think the pantry is standing out because the lighting seems to highlight the whiteness of the pantry compared to the rest of the room. not sure what your wall color is or if you are painting another color on walls than is at present. Once all the cabinetry goes to the ceiling, the pantry wont stand out the same. I would get a full opaque glass in the centre panel of the pantry door. or get a new door with centre glass panel if present door cant be modified. Add some kind of decor above pantry door as that area seems like a blank slate waiting for something.

You’re right about the lighting and the white walls. Currently Pure White but will be painting them a warmer white after cabinetry is installed. Great idea about adding the glass panel in the door.

If you get a glass panel don't get a clear glass panel get a frosted it could have an outline going around the Frosted would be really nice or paint your present door maybe you can paint it black like your venting and oven it really would look good in that spot and you could hang something over above the door if you want I don't know what unless you get a mirror up there if you want or a wreath but if you get a mirror get us a square one to match the panel there and get it with some black in it like a window pane and maybe the door will look like it has a window above it that like that it opens just thought

Wood cabinets at same height would make a nicer flow to the look of the kitchen..too many finishes and cabinet heights…are distracting in a totally visible kitchen like yours

Wood cabinets at same height would make a nicer flow to the look of the kitchen..a wood door on the pantry may also be better as white doors in a kitchen tend to get soiled easily
