Help with kitchen redo

last month

We are going to gut kitchen but not move walls. We have roughly 200 inches by 164 inches working space with 10 foot ceilings. I would love some possibilities, a sketch, and some ideas and inspiration.

A first step is with graph paper to draw a scale floorplan. With readable measurements including windows and doors.

a few major things that will need consideration in this space. 1. removal of diagonal pantry ?. 2. cooktop [ whether a range or not ] relocated to an outside wall ? 3. general appliance selection and placements 4. desire to keep the center island or willingness to eliminate it for another layout entirely. OTHER: budget? DIY abilities ? If you want a plan from Houzz folks , info Regarding adjacent spaces and Flow is needed. Have you done any layout attempts on graph paper? It can be a good start .

    What is your budget?

Find a couple inspiration photos and post them in a comment.

What is behind the door in the corner between the sink and refrigerator?

What is the boxed area in the ceiling to the left of the sink?

Welcome to the Kitchens Forum Tara!

To give you meaningful help, we need more information from you. I recommend reading the "New to Kitchens? Read Me First!" thread - especially the Featured Answer. The Read Me thread describes the information we need from you:

    • A full-measured layout of the space (not just general dimensions). Note that it should be as accurate as you can make it since inches can make a difference in what will/will not fit/work.
    • A sketch of the entire floor the Kitchen is located on.
    • The answers to a few questions (in the Read Me thread).

We look forward to getting more information from you!

There is no "roughly" anything in a kitchen There is EXACTLY, only

That means each solid wall, every opening, where a window is located in a wall.....exactly! Where doorways lead and to what......

Draw, measure use graph paper, straight lines, bold ink and up load as a jpeg.

    Everything below.all of it....has dimensions.

Hi answer bpath questions. I feel like there is negative space above cabinets.

If want ideas make life easier if on a real life budget. Choose something needs be done.

My first thing saw needed done vent hood above your island stove so when cooking not going around the room. Suprised there is none.

Quick update would be get a pro to paint and seal your cabinets color you like and new hardware.

Save money switch out or add more cabineta doors lift up. It can be used for kitchen appliances/ serving ware you rarely grab for parties.

If not worried about money do the countertops a simple color that work with any color scheme nothing to busy. Unlike painting walls and cabinets the countertop and tile is harder to move/ renovate cost more than most items. If on a tight budget try to work with it. Color on counters try work it into painting , close color for hardware, curtains etc.

There is no such thing as "roughly" when it comes to planning a kitchen space.

    1. Need not be fancy but draw on a paper the space with measurements of everything

    2. are you on a crawl space or slab? this will greatly affect your budget and if you can afford to move things like range, sinks etc. and how much cost it will take to do so. Are you able to easily move these items or are they staying in the same location?

    3. The same goes for ceilings and HVAC, note the strange soffit to the right of your pantry....why? must be something in there.

Things you want to improve on?

example from the photos the space look void of natural light yet photos appear to be taken during the day. Ask yourself are you willing to forgo upper cabinets to bring in more window and light?

What is the rest of your home like? What aesthetic and style do you want to achieve?

Hi Tara. Good feedback above about needing a measured floorplan to get the best help. Also a couple more questions:

    - What is under the kitchen? Basement, crawl, or slab? Asking in case the best layout would mean moving plumbing.

    - If you remove the corner pantry (which would get you a better flow), and/or make any changes to the island, you'll need to patch and refinish the floor, which looks like it extends beyond the kitchen. Are you open to that?

    - What is in the soffit near the pantry, circled below? Does the soffit extend into the pantry?

You don’t need a full renovation here. A marble countertop alone would bring much better cohesion.

If the budget allows, consider refining part of the cabinetry layout and adding a metal range hood, it would elevate the space and create a stronger focal point.

When the floor plan is posted here help will come . You also need to answer the questions as you go along.

FYI, I see several issues with the existing Kitchen, so I think you have the right idea about doing a gut remodel.
