Small Entry: Ideas/Help Needed!

last month
last modified: last month

I'm refreshing/updating our living room and entryway. I'm stuck on what to do with the entry. We have a new sofa and the back faces the entry, which is not a great first view upon entry. There is really no other way to arrange our furniture, as the two chairs (actually recliners) must stay where they are because of the TV placement. I've placed a sofa table behind the new sofa, I like the look. So what do we need for the entry? I don't want another console table, as that would look too "leggy" and table-ish. I've considered a bench, but we really don't need a place to take off our shoes, we dont keep shoes in the entry or have a need for a coat rack, etc. There are 2 closets in the entry.

I like the idea of a small sideboard or decorative chest, as we could use a drop zone for keys, etc. If I go with a bench I like this one, which is an olive green velvet. My concern about a bench is that it might look a bit short, our celings are 9'.

FLOOR PLAN

(our floor plan is flipped from this drawing)

View from entry to the living room, still working on the sofa table decor!

Looking from the living room to the entry. The wall where a chest or bench would go is 85" from the closet door trim to the doorway.

The artwork and decor can be changed, new entry rug is ordered

Living room: Accent colors are olive green and rust for pillows, etc.

The "artwork" above the fireplace is for size/shape decision making. (Again--opinions welcome!)

Also, I'm considering a round glass top coffee table in front of the sofa--most likely the one pictured below. It comes in pewter hammered finish or antique brass hammered finish. Opinions? (It's hard to tell from these photos, but our rug has charcoal, olive green, rust and gold colors on a silvery light gray background.)

So--ideas and opinions for our entry would be much appreciated, I'm really stuck. I'm also very open to other suggestions for the living room area decor. Help, please!

Put the console in the hall.

Turn the sofa so front legs are on rug and back legs go to the threshhold. Find a gorgeous throw, but arrange it like this one.

Face the two chairs to the t v. Sofa and chairs arranged like this:

Before investing in furniture i think your layout needs some tweaking. everything is at weird angles to each other and sorta of lined up as well so no conversation can occur.

Lyn Nielson, Thanks for your suggestions. New entry rug is in the works, and I have ivory linen-textured full length draperies I can use, 4 panels. As the windows are not centered on the wall, I'm not sure how to position them. The space between the windows is about 12", and the area to the left of the windows has the light switches. With any stack at all the switches would be fully covered. I've considered replacing the existing 2" white wood blinds with inside mount natural woven wood blinds with a valance. I'm not sure this would soften the windows though! Suggestions?

wsea--yes, the sofa is at an angle. I've tried it at right angles to the chairs, but it all seems somehow "squished up". I'll definitely give it more thought before I buy any more furniture.

Oncape, I'll try your suggested arrangement again, maybe with better spacing it won't seem so squished up.

Celery, that's a great visual, thank you.. I'd definitely need a larger mirror, but that's not a problem.

Hoping for more ideas & suggestions--thank you!

there are some talented members who are excellent at layouts, but they would require dimensions of the space.

not sure how to get their attention here but post dimensions and maybe they will chime in.

How about something simple like a pretty floating console? It doesn't sound like you need something that has a lot of function but want somewhere to simply drop keys. I think this is beautiful and you can order it in different sizes and wood tones.

You seem to have quite a few small things hanging in the entry wall. Perhaps editing down would make for a cleaner entry.

thanks kateinparadise--I do have a shelf somewhat like that. I hadn't thought of using it in the entry.

The living room part of the great room is 15'6" from the wood/tile transition strip to the end of the TV niche. The available area width wise is 14', as we need some space between the living are and the dining room. Hoping this will be helpful! The new area rug is 9x12.
