Rug, coffee table, and accent pillows

last month
last modified: last month

Help--I've struggled for WEEKS looking for the following:

  • Area rug with terracotta, teal, and cream colors and a muted pattern to pull together my colors. I'd like to layer new thicker rug over the 7'6"x9'6" cotton jute-look rug in my pics. Already bought and returned FIVE rugs that I thought looked good in "View In My Room" pics, but that didn't quite work in reality. Sigh.
  • Coffee table, preferably about 50" wide oval with a bottom shelf and a wood or glass top.
  • Set of accent pillows and maybe a throw to break up my "terracotta sofa wall".

Main walls are old Frazee Oak Buff, and the wall framing the windows was just painted SW Willow Tree--looks blue on my screen but it's actually a green. Going for a somewhat eclectic beachy theme in this San Diego area townhome. MANY THANKS!!

For the coffee table, check out Room & Board’s ”Gibson” , there are lots of other options on their site also. R & B has the best customer service & return policy ever.

Their sofa pillows are excellent also, not cheap, but much nicer than elsewhere, IMO.

Btw, your fish tail palm & ZZ (?) are loving all the light.

Use your bench for a coffee table and add a large tray.

Add some long (two story) drapery panels to the windows to soften the feel.

You've got lots of space for a much larger rug, fill the space and move the round chair closer to the fireplace. Center the rug on the doors/window AND the firebox.

Is that a surf board mounted next to the window?

Put it over your fireplace mantel for a dramatic draw your eye up statement.

Put the mirror by the front door, you have plenty of light in this room, and you aren't reflecting much of the space anyway.

First things first. Repositiion the rug you have so that it is in front of the slider.

Measure carefully, so the borders of the underlying rug make a good frame.

I would not do a thicker rug, too heavy and a trip hazard. Go with a flatweave. If it is your budget, do a more substantial jute (no cotton).

    This idea:

Check out the website. I think it is definitely your style.

Following freewayxx, could you please share the rug options that did not work for you? This can help others avoid suggesting the same choices... And I have a similar rug dilemma (with colors and setting), and I would appreciate learning from your experience. Thank you, and good luck with your project! 😊

WOW, in less than two hours, you guys have given me some fantastic ideas I'd never have thought of....

    • Teal bench with large tray as coffee table -- love that!! A nice tray would be far less expensive than a new coffee table and the tray would also soften the blaring teal. But then what do I put in front of the slider? I really need something there to hide some hideous French drains in the brick along the slider.
    • Larger rug, centered on short side with respect to slider -- I thought I needed the hardwood path thru the room to the slider, but now I think not. However, a rug whose short edge is a bit wider than the slider would mean the long side would bisect the path to the guest suite in an odd way and possibly extend too far into the dining area. Kind of in a quandary about this. Can't afford a custom sized rug. See new pic.
    • Tall drapes -- I had dark brown sheers on medallions (and a coral wall), but took them down quite a while ago and have disliked the starkness of the windows ever since. Doing something similar to what I used to have, but with a cream color, is something I'm definitely pondering.
    • Surfboard above fireplace -- Tried that and it seemed too insubstantial for that huge wall. However, when I get around to drapes, the board will have to go somewhere else.
    • Moving round chair closer to fireplace doesn't seem feasible. It would block the guest hallway and the path to the slider.

@Celery. Visualization, Rendering images -- Can you tell me where you found that coffee table? I don't think I've seen that one yet. As for the rugs, I tried the Loloi Terracotta Sky already. Liked it better than the other 4, but the extreme distressing on one side was too extreme. The pattern in the Newport is too strong for me--looking for something more subtle/faded.

@lobo_93 -- I'll dig up the the rugs that I returned and list them for you when I get a chance. Most were Loloi rugs.

Your plants are beautiful and you have a lovely view to your patio. It doesn't look like you need the privacy so I wouldn't add drapes to your beautiful slider and transom.

Your walls seem to have too much color......can't tell if it's gold or peach.

Here are some stronger colored rugs that work with your colors. Not sure I would layer over your fiber rug.

AI also seems to like blue for your space. I just ran it through once, though - so I don’t know what else AI might have come up with. I did request the walnut coffee table, and a silk rug, and a lumbar pillow to be added to sofa (which the lumbar pillow AI gave me is more huge than I would have picked- but I like it). Anyway, I did not specify any particular color on rug or lumbar- this is what I got.

Maybe AI took me literally, and gave me a piece of silk fabric for the rug. That is sort of what it looks like.

Adding your room plus rendering, again- so you can compare.

I would add a gold metal piece on the table- and or a large piece of citrine rock crystal- to connect with your wall color. Beautiful jewel tones.

Pretty room and I like some of the rug suggestions!

My first thought, though, is what is going on with this oddly-colored strip? And now that I study the room, I see that the wall on the right might be the same odd color. It seems so out of place to me. There is already a nice mix of burgandy and teal in the room but this stands out like a sore thumb. IMO, of course.

Really like the third rug Beverly posted.

I like the depth of color that AI came up with. The deep blue tones are striking in your space. The blue also ties in with your ottoman/bench, as well as your runner rug, etc. AI is brilliant.

For another take- you could consider a light blue. These rugs have a ”silk like” appearance. I think you mentioned upthread that you are not interested in highly patterned, so these offer more of a distressed look. Plus, they have some of the sand/beige tones.

    Here is one link:

You can also look at Etsy.com as a coffee table source possibility.

If you want teal- try this one. On sale and I think it’s worth a shot. There’s a video of the rug also on the site:

    https://rugsource.com/rugs/antique-style-teal-rug-with-delicate-ornate-accents-5x8?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=17340244930&gbraid=0AAAAADud2fRar-s1cXQqw1vYZaQM72NSS&gclid=CjwKCAjw4ufOBhBkEiwAfuC7-Y6AgH9v8vkJEHAMpq8GHjPiub8lotbqt2mthGJSpk37IxV0De4M_hoCtoQQAvD_BwE

You could possibly layer this one, as well.

You have a nice space and lots of great color. I would suggest that you get a rug that anchors the space- versus trying to incorporate every color in your room into a rug. That could possibly look chaotic... plus, not really give you the style you are going for.

Responses to some of your comments and questions:

    • Rugs I tried and returned are in new pics. Purchased 2 on Amazon and 2 thru Home Depot. Got a third at Home Goods and can't find an image of it.
    • AI -- I've been using ChatGPT almost daily for over a year and have spent hours getting frustrated with its rug selections. It recommends specific rugs and when I ask it to show them in my room, it often shows COMPLETELY different rugs. I did trials with two subscription home decor AIs, but didn't have much luck with either. WHAT AI DO YOU GUYS USE for home design/decor?
    • Wall colors -- my main color as mentioned in original post is Frazee Oak Buff. It's got a buttery cast to it. The color around the slider is SW Willow Tree, a green shade that a decorator I hired helped me pick (and now I don't like it, boo hoo). It replaced my original color (picked by a different decorator, along with the Oak Buff, about 12 years ago). I am repainting all my accent walls, but not the main Oak Buff walls.
    • White "stripe" across wall above sofa -- it's a big heavy BEAM, not a stripe painted on the wall. I'm considering painting it a different color. Currently it's the same white as my interior doors and trim.
    • Rug preferences -- I don't want a solid, but don't want a heavy distinct pattern, either. The dining chairs in the same great room have a pattern that would clash with a heavy pattern, and the painting above the sofa and surfboard by the slider are heavily patterned and really bright. I want a rug that softly pulls things together.
    • Drapes -- I don't want them for privacy, I just want to soften and frame the windows.
    • Rug size -- NEED TO FIGURE THIS OUT BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE. I want a bigger rug but am in a quandary. Standard rug sizes larger than the one I have would have to be flipped so that their long side is along the slider, and their short side is along the couch, which seems backwards and awkward. If I didn't flip them, the long side would extend too far past the round chair into the dining area. Thinking of trying a larger square rug, but that could look a little odd, too.
    • LOVE Citizenry and Room & Board and Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrell and Perigold, but most of their offerings are too $$ for me. Also, prefer places with good return policies.

    Rugs I tried:

Loloi Lauren Brick/Midnight (too dark -- my room is NOT usually as bright as in my pics).

Loloi Lauren Brick/Multi (Liked this one and Terracotta Sky the best so far)

Livabliss Marlene Light Blue too washed out in my room, too much greyish tone

Safaveih Abstract Rust/Wool (terrible in my room, lines too distinct, color too orangey)

Here's a close-up of my sofa fabric. It looks crazy bright here, but the color usually looks a duller coral, red, or orange, depending on the light. It's also a sort of a textured/embossed velvet animal print. I consider this coral as my primary accent color, and teal as secondary, but maybe that's just an artifact of having a giant coral wall for years.

Beautiful house and great natural light. will look much better to have all the walls and the ”beam” the same color. i would do a bright warm white.

  • last month

Just paint the beam out in your Oak Buff color. I would ignore the ”Let’s paint everything on the planet a warm white” folks.

Now that I see the pattern in your upholstery, how about this?

Let the orange be the dramatic feature and keep the floor subtle.

You wondered about what to hide the drain? Plants!

I really don't see beachy here. I'd lean into the eclectic, collected look, as if you've sailed the seven seas, acquiring interesting objects along the way.

  • last month

SimplyNatural-- yeah, my style is definitely a bit eclectic, but leaning somewhat beachy because of the pencil reed/rattan furniture, surfboard, koa wood paddles, surf books, and painting (by a friend, so I can't get rid of it, even though I LOVE your example). Your mockup is beautiful. I want that teal-topped side table and the coffee table! Are they AI ideas or real products? I've done SOOOOO much AI experimentation and am always bummed to find the things it picks are typically either not real products, or they're mega expensive.

The elements I used for the illustration above (not done with AI, by the way) are:

Rug: Karachi KAR-1 from rugsdirect.com (currently 57% off).

Coffee table: Briyan round coffee table from Wayfair (not expensive, but also only 34" diameter).

Side table: Shagreen end table, tabletop color green, from Perigold; Wayfair and other sites have it too.

Art: Abstract torn paper face collage print from Etsy (chosen for its horizontal shape as much as its image; maybe the vertical piece done by your friend could find another, more vertical space to inhabit?).

A search for the listed phrase on the indicated websites finds the items.
