Tablecloth tales

last modified: 29 days ago

My DR table is a beloved crotch mahogany, a sizeable 4'x 9.5'. For everyday protection and to lighten it up for use at the beachhouse, I bought a wipeable french oilcloth. I based my color scheme for the room around it in part.

It was ruined byt the fire and could not be replaced (and yes I have looked at every source for French oilcloth). Visiting family in Chagrin Falls, we walked by a home goods store and DH saw a linen tablecloth in the window. We loved it, we bought it. We use it all the time. It washes quite well. I like it so much, I decided to buy a second, back up one.

It is, however, too narrow. I think I have located an Etsy source with the identical fabric, and they do custom work. So I am thinking I can have a second one made that is wider. But the fabric only comes 55" wide. If I had, say, an 8" drop, I still need at least 64" in width.

Here is my question. Can I add a border? If so what kind? Solid, I assume? White or blue?

Here is a glamour shot of my table cloth, because don't we all serve corn this way, with a handy side of flowers? The color, the variation and the width of the stripe are all non-negotiable.

PS I *think* that, in addition to a matchig solid white or blue, I could also get these two other striped fabrics (in the blue) for a border, in addition to solids. My tablecloth fabric is on the far right,

Love the blue and white stripe.

    My comments on a border:

-Regardless of color or size, make sure the fabricator will miter the corners.

-Blue is a difficult color to match. Will you be happy with something close?

-If a true match cannot be had, what is your accent color in your DR? Could you have the border made in the accent color?

-If all else fails, white, but in the same fabric, would look great.

OOPS, I need to edit my post!

To be clearer, this will be for the fabrication of a new, second tablecloth. I think I can get blue from the same line of fabrics so it should match exactly. Do you think blue solid is best for a border? Do you think a border will look odd?

I don’t think a border would look odd if the border and body fabrics match in texture/weave exactly. If you use a solid blue border, the blues must match exactly. 💡How about using the blue stripe on the bias for the border?!?! Then you don’t have to worry about matching.

How about using the blue stripe on the bias for the border

I don't excatly know what that means. Diagonal?

I just quickly googled ”stripe tablecloth with border” and all the pictures that popped up showed solid with border. I think you could easily do blue striped with white or blue…maybe even make the border in two sections…...wide white, then another small border below the white out of the striped fabric.

Another idea….use white border and trim the bottom with blue, light weight piping…..maybe crossgrain ribbon.

Or more low key, just add blue border.

Another idea….border out of wide cotton lace similar to this in white.

oooh I love grosgrain... but right now I wash it on cold and line dry --- i dont even iron it. I worry about another material racting differently

    Yes, bias is diagonal.

Oh gosh, hold on --- having done a google serach on stripes with borders, I have discovered similar tablecloths in sizes that work, no customization needed. False alarm!

Could you do with a shorter drop? Say 6 inches? Doing some math if the fabric is 55 wide, using 54 as the width after seams, a 3 inch border would give you a finished width of 54+ 6=60 finished inches. That would be a 6 inch drop, would that be okay? This math gives 3 inches of striped fabric and 3 of the "banding" fabric.

I would worry about proportions if the contrast fabric was 5 inches of the 8 inch drop.

    That's a good point.

Adding to the complexity, my table is rounded at the ends. Not quite oval. But it means I get long sort of tails on the corners.

Barbie was right, Math is hard. LOL

I can’t figure out the scale of the stripes and I can’t figure out the pricing (only sold by the bolt?), but here is fabric that is 120” wide!

When I saw the striped tablecloth, I immediately saw it with a floral border in my head🤷‍♀️ something to think about

I think a solid blue border would work. Another option would be to add a wide white section in the middle like a faux runner.

Blue is very popular and you are committed but that yellow would always be my choice. A border is of course doable but as is it looks so neat and tidy I think I wouldn't.

Have you thought of having a flat king-size linen sheet cut down and finished?

I prefer no border. But a solid blue that matches exactly would work.

I like the idea of a sheet too.

Just remember, if fabricating it, they need to split the difference and add to both sides...not just one as one might be tempted to do.

Not part of the question, but I've bought fabric-backed vinyl to cover my tables before I put a cloth on them. No seams like a typical table mat, cushioned and waterproof to protect the table. Just cut to fit. I keep them rolled on a bolt under the bed when not in use.

No, this is a very nice linen with lovely variation and subtle slubbing, and that is something I like about it. It is casual but yet a bit elegant.

As far as yellow, this room is painted pale blue and allready has these fabrics on the head chairs, and on pillows along a 10 foot window seat, and on the chandelier and sconce shades. All of it less than 18 months ago. So not yellow.

The walls have since been painted Borrowed Light (very pale blue), post fire

.PS Yes, I also have a protective cloth under the table cloth

You picked out the perfect fabric for that chair. It really enhances the chair beautifully.
