How Much is Too Much? How Big is Too Big?

I was musing on the large engagement ring stones worn by celebrities and wondered what are your thoughts on the subject questions. I'm talking about for everyday daytime wear, not red carpet or nighttime party attire.

One of my nearby shopping centers caters to an affluent demographic. I'm always entertained by the variety of outfits, physical enhancements and jewelry displayed by some of the patrons, especially since I don't live in a fashion center like Manhattan, Paris or Milan which I can only experience through social media.

So, I hope you'll indulge me with a thought exercise. I'm really curious to see how our GW population thinks. I'll chime in at the end so as to not influence the flow.

Would you wear a 5-20+ carat diamond engagement ring to the market or to the gym? Large diamond studs? Tennis bracelet or necklace? Is there a limit to how many pieces of jewelry you would wear at one time?

How about large non-diamond stones? Do you react differently to seeing those worn during the day?

Are the answers different regionally or generationally?

My jewelry is very understated. Every now and again I do see larger-than-average diamond rings. I am simply amazed at wearing something large everyday. But to each own.

I imagine in the sphere not traveled by me, jewlry us a symbol.

I can appreciate the status of the Van Cleef neckage that the only if my nail salon wears.

Close up view when she threads my brows.

I’m kind of a minimalist so less is more for me with regard to this kind of thing. I wear my wedding/engagement rings all the time except when I play golf. So I guess if I had a giant one I’d wear it wherever I went. I think a ring with a huge stone might bug me though I guess the big stone would keep it from flipping around - something that does annoy me sometimes with rings.

While many larger rings are gorgeous, I would feel uncomfortable wearing this size of ring. It would be in the way and it could attract unwanted attention. My aunt who was waiting to cross at a light had her 5 carat diamond pendant yanked off her neck by a guy on a bike, I just think what could have happened if the chain did not break and allow the thief to easily take the pendant. I also know that in our general area people have been robbed for jewelry in parking lots or followed home to rob. While this does not happen often, it does happen and it is not worth it to me to make myself a target. That said, my mom walked around with 12 carats between her engagement and wedding rings for years, no issues but I thought it was "too much" and not worth the risk of physical harm.

I generally do not notice jewelry on others. I did see a young mother the other day with her 2 toddlers, and she had very long, pointy nails. I had to wonder how she hadn't poked out her kids' eyes yet.

What would be too big for me? Most of what I have. I have several pieces of beautiful diamond jewelry that I wear on occasion. But on a day to day basis, I avoid jewelry that gets in the way. I don't wear jewelry to the gym, other than gold hoop earrings. I remove all rings, bracelets and necklaces beforehand.

I definitely do not travel with expensive jewelry. An acquaintance recently lost a $4k earring while in a foreign country... why would one pack that, carry that, or wear that internationally? I didn't ask.

I’m more attracted to sparkle than size and many larger cut stones don’t sparkle as much as more modest high quality stones, especially set in multiples. No one in my circle wears huge diamonds Status isn’t important.

I went to a baby shower last week and couldn’t believe the size of the rocks on these women’s fingers. It was not a wealthy crowd. Solid middle class maybe upper middle class. I look at it and think debt. I’m just not a jewelry person.

I also prefer brilliance over size. Most people I think used to rarely go without their rings. Now I feel like people's wedding and engagement rings go off and on more.

My mother had largish diamond studs that she only took out for periodic cleaning for 45 years.

The thing that bugs me about diamonds is that the pricing is inflated because they are not particularly rare.

@Kendrah I see those types of rings on certain groups and think Costco!

My engagement ring is sapphire and diamond and I dont wear it daily because I’ve had to replace the sapphire twice. The original design had the center stone sit too high so the second time I knocked it out the setting was reworked. There are three or four bands I like to wear together and I also like wearing a more modest Paloma Picasso pearl ring on that finger with a matching olive leaf band. Most of my own rings are not big or flashy but I LOVE seeing big, beautiful stone jewelry on other people, especially vintage pieces! I have a friend who wears diamond earrings that are so big everyone assumes they are fake. They were her mother’s and very much the real thing, ultra sparkly. They are gorgeous! If I had earrings that size I’d probably lose one 😳

I love beautiful jewelry, but I hardly wear any jewelry at all, other than small earrings and maybe a simple chain necklace sometimes. I work a lot with my hands and with kids, so hand jewelry would take a beating, not to mention getting caught on stuff and being a safety hazard. When I used to wear wristwatches, the bands would get destroyed pretty quickly from all the wet gooky stuff I have to handle - along with washing my hands over and over.

Maybe if I didn't do anything but shop and dine, I'd wear more jewelry 😄

@colduphere2 I was going to say the same thing. A friend owns a local jewelry store and said many of the younger ladies want to go large, so they go with lab grown, which she does not carry, for the price point.

I rarely wear jewelry when I am home. What I wear depends on where I am going. I would never wear jewelry to walk or workout.

To answer your question @Fun2BHere, IRL I don't notice what anyone is wearing, but I don't particularly care for the diamonds over 5-6 carats. Larger colored stones are fine.

That said, the luxury jewelry ads and features in AD are always beautiful. I enjoyed seeing the Crown Jewels in London and I still remember the first time I saw the jewelry at the Smithsonian when I was a young teen.

I have large loud vulgar fake diamond studs I wear sometimes, not for events, just with tshirt/jeans.

I see some whopping big stones around here, even at the grocery store. Its a wealthy area ( which begs the question, what am i doing here.).

I wear a gold ring with a diamond in the center surrounded by small emeralds most of the time. I leave all the good stuff at home when I travel.

I often tell DH that he should have been born during the Renaissance. He's very artistic and very talented in several areas - he paints, sings, cooks, gardens, does calligraphy and designs jewelry. Over the years he has given me many pieces of jewelry both new and vintage - some have large stones, others have intricate designs, some have rare, exotic stones.

It helps that we have been close friends for over 40 years with a married couple who are jewelers because while DH designs beautiful pieces he still needs a professional to source the material and have it crafted - and while our jeweler is making a profit we're not paying retail. They have contacts all over and just returned from the Tuscon Gem Show which specializes in colored gemstones and minerals. You can find large colored stones with high brilliance yet are relatively affordable if you look for other semi-precious stones like tourmaline, garnet, zircon, spinel. And they come in many different and unusual colors.

The mark-up on jewelry is astonishing and while I appreciate those gorgeous pieces that celebrities wear I can't in good conscience spend that kind of money.

Our friends have mentioned that a some of their younger customers have asked about lab created diamonds but few have purchased them - perhaps they go elsewhere since the store will order for them but they don't stock them. They'll also show them semi-precious stones and vintage pieces and often that's what the engaged couple end up selecting. Especially those looking for a unique, custom piece.

My favorite ring is a simple eternity band with emerald cut diamonds in a channel setting that I wear everywhere - even in the pool. It has the requisite sparkle but isn't ostentatious. I do limit how much jewelry I wear whether it's costume or real - too much can make it appear tacky. I like to keep it simple.

I’m on board with you all . I wear my mother’s 25th anniverssry ring always. She gave it to me when my engagement ring was stolen. It seems to draw attention, due to its unusual setting, not the center stone size. Oh! KSWL, ( excuse my jumping in) I had a one carat diamond reset in that setup fashion. Hope its not terribly $$ to remake. We shall see.

i don’t fear wearing my mother’s large dinner (21st) birthday ring. It’s an ancient lavender amethyst with seed pearls. As for gold, I’ve ” lost” two loved bracelets. I refuse to replace real gold at todays prices. Yuk.

My daughters engagnement ring turns heads. It's an oval, sparkles like the dickens, and is large by 'regular' people standards. I have no facts on it's origin but it has been suggested it is a lab made diamond. I guess they have a higher sparkle rate???? Presently she sits behind

a computer but her origins are in Medical labortory Science and so I asked her if she were still in the lab if that would be her choice. She takes it off for assundry of daily tasks so didn't see it as an issue. My rings rarely leave my fingers.
