Help! I need to pick a rug!

last month

Please help I am the worst at picking rugs! I just got new furniture and repainted my room! But I can’t figure out the right rug! It’s almost like I don’t know what I want until someone shows me

Since monitors aren't accurate, what color did you paint the walls and what color is your furniture? What is the room size and what is your budget?

Not sure how you thought you had the room for a permanent oversized chaise lounge in your living room.

A layout like you see below would have worked for your room.

Adjust your ceiling 'eyeball downlights' to highlight the bookshelves on the fireplace wall.

Here are a variety of area rugs that could narrow your selection.

Katinparadise- I painted the room sanderling Sherman Williams! Also I know I want an 8x10 rug. The furnitureis from Bassett furniture.

Myles Thin Track Arm Swivel Chair- Craftsman Peacock fabric

Allure Track Two Arm Chaise- Pitt Camel fabric

I would like to stick in between 200-400 range, since I do have a 1 year old and things can get messy.

Lynn Nielson, thank you so much for the recommendation. However I don’t think I like that one. I want a little more color I think

Hi Beverly, I’m not the greatest at all of this, but I really loved the chair and the furniture store showed me a layout and I thought it would work so here we are.. anyways I am very happy with my furniture and I do like the room and spacing it gives me in the room since I more likely will have a lot of play toys in there for my 1 year old.

Thank you for the suggestion on the lights! Yes I will move those!! As for the rugs you posted, I really am gravitating to the first and last one! So cool how you picked an orangey look to tie it all in! Did you happen to see any out there with that pop of orange but more of a geometrical look?

One thing I would like to do is put a pattern wall paper in the back of the built in shelves and I don’t want the rug to clash with something is I did that

So the layout you agreed to provides you with a chaise lounge and an occasional chair? Boy I'd like to see that layout. How do you open and walk through the front door? Do you plan a foyer table and mirror to define the entry?

You can try your own rug selections on Rugs-Direct.com. They have the visualizer tool I used to place rugs in your room.

The rug selection is challenging because your walls lean GREIGE and the chairs leans to a gold undertone. The rug will have to bridge that difference, that's why I think bringing in the orange works because it's a distraction.

Hey Beverly, I gave you the benefit of the doubt with your first comment but I gotta be honest here you’re coming across pretty rude and making me feel crappy about where I am in the process… thanks for that

Sorry but the furniture store steered you all wrong there is no way to say that any other way. You do not buy furniture to accommodate a 1 yr old BTW. The room looks empty and not inviting at all. IMO you need a rug now that has the 2 colors of the furniture in it and for sure not a check . Something with some life to help that space .

I looked on Rugsusa.com and found these. Perhaps upload your photo there to see what appeals to you. So far, your furnishing are fairly neutral so you can bring in color if you prefer. You could order a small 3x5 to try it out so easier to return if needed. I think your cute dog looks great on each one! :) Here are some examples from their site -

What size rug are you buying?

Ruggables has washable rugs that launder well (repeatedly) per friends with kids and pets. Larger rug sizes need a commercial size washer.

Does the room have storage for the toys? Since the room includes the front entry, it’s always nice to have easy storage for a “ten second tidy” when guests are expected.

Costco and Amazon both also have washable rugs that are for sable. They are a great option. Are you planning an ottoman or storage area for toys? What about side tables and lamps?

Polypropylene for easy cleaning, nice and colorful, reasonably priced.

I call it like I see it. What good does lying to you accomplish? The plan is not conducive to watching TV or socializing.

The chaise is great looking. The store sold you what you wanted, not what works. Turn the rug

Beverly, a note, it’s not about what you say it’s how you say it.

I'm concerned about your layout working with your French doors. How will they open with a chair there, and how will the chair not block half of the pathway through that door?

First mess around with the configuration of the furniture in the space. Then use blue tape on your floor to mark the corners of an 8x10 rug. Then take pictures and look at it. It is amazing how objectively pictures can show what size works and what doesn't. After all of that, nail down the size and then start to consider the color.

Have you thought about who is going to sit in the chair and talk with you while you are lounging on "the bed"? (Those mondo stuffed chaises are really good excuses to plop a bed in the middle of a living room, right? :) )

I think this room works as a playroom den. No everybody wants or needs a living room or has friends over.

Unfortunately, a harsh tone from time to time is the price one pays here for free advice from really good designers.

Yeah the harsh tone is unfortunate. It is a playroom/ den and I love the layout so far. I laid in there Sunday morning while my husband sat in the chair and the baby played on the floor with all his toys. It’s perfect for that because we have a completely other lfamily room where all our guests usually hang out

I think it’s great Julia. It works for your needs and you like it. That is what matters. Have fun with it.

  • last month

I like it too. I like the more colorful rugs, like the 1st and last one in Beverly's first post. Hope you post a pic. of the room when you do get one. Love the lounge and like it in your room, makes the room kind of fun I think.

I’m curious if anyone feels a solid rug could look good in there.. I do love the comfiness of a shag rug and I saw just a solid cream one..

Shag and kids don’t mix well in my experience
