Gravel Driveway

last modified: 27 days ago

I have a gravel driveway, over 25 years of solid pack. No soft spots, no ridges or divits. The only problem is that the weeds grow up through it, and it drives my wife crazy.

She has called a couple of landscapers and they want to regrade the whole thing and start over. A friend said I should just rent a harley rake and do it myself. I think that would just cause more problems by loosening the soil for the weeds, and losing my hard packed surface.

I want to cover it with heavy duty barrier fabric and just add a fresh layer of gravel.

What is my best option

Round up, the weeds will dry up, die and blow away or use the torch method above.

Tried burning them off, only good for a short time

Not a big fan of chemicals, but we have used several different kinds which claim total vegetation kill, but just a few weeks later, same problem.

Landscape fabric just makes the grass and saplings that grow in it more challenging to pull up. It is almost as much of a devil as a gravel path.

The only real solution is to pave the driveway.

Neither of the solutions your propose will work for more than a year.

My son loves the ”flame thrower” option. Yes, you have to repeat but it gets less and less over time. (Because if you have ever let the weeds go to seed, those seeds will grow eventually. Keep after it.)

edited to emphasize to NEVER let the weeds go to seed. You’re just setting yourself up for failure over and over again if you do.

Once the weeds are killed, we used Preen and it worked it keeps weed seeds from germinating. They have an all natural version now which you could try. I found this:

If you are looking for an organic or hormone-free option, Preen Natural Vegetable Garden Weed Preventer relies on corn gluten meal. Instead of synthetic chemicals, this natural byproduct of corn milling inhibits the root formation of germinating seeds.

I had a neighbor who used a small torch like the one suggested. Worked like a charm-he did get out there on a regular basis, but much better than using chemicals.

I second Preen - but only for newly germinating weeds. Any that have already sprouted, like perennials, will have to be killed first. Identify the weeds so you know what youre dealing with. Also, what kind of gravel do you have? Adding fines like Item 4 will pack it down. Attractive pea gravel is the worst!

I have a gravel driveway. Most in our neighborhood do. I use Ortho ground clear on ours. Soon as weeds begin to pop up in spring I take care of them. I do it weekly this way it keeps them in check. As far as using a torch if I relied on that my driveway would be a weed mess as we have been under burn bans almost the entire spring. We had bans March 1st-15th then March 28th-May 3rd.

    Just spread this on the brick front walk. Don't over load it; use a hard fiber broom to work it in;

olymeric Sand (Best Overall): A mixture of sand and special binders that, when activated by water, becomes firm and flexible. It resists weeds and washout, locking pavers in place.

We have weeds through our pavers too. I’ve used chemicals and it works for a time but they pop back up and I also feel it kills what is visible not the whole plant. We have redone the sand twice in 8 years with polymeric sand and still weeds come through
