I would keep the rug too. Let the rug and furniture be the star for a while, rather than the really bright red walls. The paint I see in your living room, would go well with the rug in the dining room, so maybe that color. Its nice and light and bright looking.

Without color on the wall, your room is very dominated by brown. I'd choose a soft green or even a bit bluish green for the walls. Not a pro but I've seen a lot of pictures of "woody" rooms with walls or trim or upholstery in those colors to go with the wood.

You are right - we have moved away from the overly warm, dark and saturated colors of the 90s. Are you considering changing the wall color in the adjoining room as well?

Painting a whole home can be a lot to tackle, but if you have had this color scheme for 30 years it is time for a refreshed look.

The good news is you bypassed the entire gray trend, so most of your home and decor should work well with the warm color trends of today. You are coming in at the mid to tail end of the white on white trend (still going strong, but colors are coming back.)

Instead of darker, more saturated warmth from the 90s we are seeing softer, more organic, nature inspired warmth.

If you are thinking about updating the rest of the home I would suggest selecting the main neutral for the home and then selecting a coordinating color for the dining room. If not then we need to limit the colors to colors that are strong enough to stand next to the heavier gold tone in the adjoining room or simply choose a lighter, softer version of the gold in the adjoining room.

Woven Raffia could be applied to the walls.

Patterned wallpaper could also be used.

I wouldn't call it the 90s...I would call your scheme timeless. Keep the walls that gorgeous color...just change the rug.

I love seeing adventerous colors on the wall. It's always a great for you NEVER for me sort of thing. I do dislike the way the trim pops against the high contrast colors.
