Both look bulky to me. I think that's just the nature of the piece.

A bit more modern looking, but you could mix with the right transitional pieces. It will be more expensive than the ones you show.

They offer lots of leather and suede color options. We used their Performance Suede and have been very happy with that material after having to clean a few stains.

They offer a wide or narrow seat option. We ordered 3 of the wide seats to make the sofa.

American Leather has great recliner sofas but they are $$$$ The leather is top notch and the quality of the materials and mechanisms are top of the line.

Ventura Power pick, not bad. better than the rolled sofa above. Like the square arm sofa posted by beverly but not that second one.

You could look at home theater seating for more modern looking choices.

Povison is one of many reclining sofas on the market. To make it look more traditional vs modern leather, Get it on a fabric. These by Povison the legs move out under your feet and the head portion raises up. It takes minimal space behind the sofa to accommodate the recling position. What makes them obvious as a reclining sofa is the room for the reclining. Also bulk can be in the armrest. Keep it more streamlined. However the more modern sofas are lower to the ground, which is less bulky. Be sure to test out the feel of the sofa prior to buying and prepare to spend a bi tmore money, but well worth it to get a sofa that won't quickly break down.
