Address your question to your local county extension office. They will know if there is a bug or disease in your region that is affecting your tree.

Leaf you show is an oak leaf, not a maple. Prb'ly best to follow Beverly's advice above.

Agree with the local county extension office (but put the leaf in a sealed bag before taking it in). Or have a tree arborist come out to your property.

Are you seeing any caterpillars hanging from silk lines below the oak tree? I am just starting to see our annual caterpillar parachuters. Unless we have a big infestation of a particularly destructive caterpillar that risks the oak tree (which is rare here), we don’t spray the 70’ trees. The caterpillars we usually get don’t permanently harm the trees and provide food for the birds.

When we planted this tree 30 years ago, the landscaper charged us for an October glory maple . He turned out to be a kind of shady weird guy and we had lots of problems with his work. But it never occurred to me to question that. Obviously, I don't know my trees. Thanks everyone.
