IMO your rug should be centered on the fireplace. We can't see the overall size of the room, but perhaps the seating should be moved away from the windows. Maybe there is room for a console table with table lamps behind the sofa.

I'd add sheer draperies and a tree to the room also.

I think you've found 2 good options, and so opposite!

I think 2 gives it a whole other dimension and for me, I prefer the warmth and the color depth and options it gives.

Neither -1st adds nothing to room as it feels bland/doesn’t create a connection. 2nd is too dark/not very complementary. Suggest a lighter blue, cream, rust combo. You’ll know when you find the prefect rug, as you won’t doubt your choice.

Be sure to further enhance room by pulling in more blue and your art will also pop.

Option 2, as long as the colors are the strong ones shown in the first two option 2 photos.

I might (a) get a larger rug than the current one and move it left; (b) add a chair left of the fireplace for balance; (c) tweak the built-ins a bit, squaring off the arches and adding trim that links to the fireplace surround, so they look more integrated/finished. And I'd probably move the current art to another location and substitute something stronger, although I haven't found just the right piece. Here are three options I tried. (These use a different rug with similar colors, just reversed--but I like your choice better!)
