I need to understand why the soffit at all. Is this a new kitchen then if so why did the cabinets not go to the ceiling . If a must then no trim

I'd add a wide/deep crown and paint it all the same color as the cabinets.

Yes if you have a deeper crown, it would fool the eye that the soffit not actually there.

Since the vertical walls of the soffit are paneled with equal spaces above and below the paneling it might look "uneven" if crown is added to the soffit/ceiling juncture.

My guess here ? Someone did a kitchen refresh, ( we see the drop down for the desk , not usually done anymore ) then cut back a much deeper and looming soffit as far back as it could go, The soffit is probably carrying plumbing from a second floor.

You cant trim it as you want successfully,.Kitchens dating back to the seventies, eighties, nineties? It was common to find this soffit scenario, easier and less expensive for a builder and often nearly two feet deep even if all they carried was saucer sized recessed lighting - the inexpensive routing.

You already have a small crown at cabinet/soffit meet.

We took out a HUGE looming soffit over a very awkwardly shaped island , made a new island,accent color green,, redid the floors, changed all the lighting. Sometimes a lot better is just that. Not perfect, but a whole lot better. This gentleman still loves his cherry.and there was SO much "other" needed , decoratively, to lift the house out of it's 30 yr past, and leave granny behind.

When stuck with a soffit, but envy/dream of cabinetry to the ceiling I found this solution 'faux' cabinet look to be an attractive dupe. Is Jan saying this dates your kitchen? I could see that, but again if you are stuck with the soffit as most homes have that date in the last centruy, it's a fabulous "fix."

Might soffits be "dated' ? Everything eventually dates. A lipstick fix is not always the answer, so live and let live, unless your result will be great. Call it......a squeeze that will not yield tasty juice, in THIS case.

Had we the ability to buy fascia veneer here, have it stained perfectly to match a 30 year old kitchen? Would all we did have been yet better? Sure. . But is was major squeeze to get that juice .
