Your lower picture doesn't look like my Romaine either, it may not be Black Seeded Simpson or Bibb but it's close in resemblance. Not Romaine fer sure as far as I can see.

Of course you can eat your home grown lettuce. Washing it is just part of meal prep. In fact it's less likely than bought stuff to be contaminated You'll know it has not been doused in chemicals, irrigated with dirty water or packed in iffy conditions. And you'll find it superior in taste to store bought.

I agree, homegrown lettuce is not only safe to eat but probably safer than anything in the store. In addition to the chemicals, dirty water and iffy conditions Floral mentioned, you know that you are the one that handled your lettuce. You know whether you washed your hands and what you put on your soil for fertilizer. You have that control when you grow your own.

I also agree with vgkg, that doesn't look like romaine to me. Maybe Bibb or a loose leaf type?
