Romaine lettuce

I grew Romaine lettuce as shown in the bottom picture which looks very different from what we buy from grocerry store, why it is so. The grocery store lettuce in easy to wash as it is compact and after washing outside leaves, rest of the leaves don't need to be seperated but home grown lettuce has to be washed one by one and perhap

s there is also some risk of contamination from soil. So why these two are different and can I eat homegrown lettuce? thanks
