I just remodeled my kitchen and I got granite and now i wish i had gone with solid surface or quartz. I think granite will always be "in style" but quartz is a little more current and different from what everyone has. You could do a dark painted island and lighter painted cabinets. Black cabinets (if you get enough light) are beautiful, add brushed nickel hardware and white quartz counters. Stainless steel narrow tiles would look good or paint cabinets light gray or cream and use a charcoal tile backsplash with dark cream counters.

I've posted widely different styles. If you want change, focusing on the style, a color scheme, all the details that you want to achieve, will help you. Start a "design board." Gather samples. Go to a stoneyard where they have slabs of granite, marble, quartz. Even if you cant' afford (it's out of my budget! I'm doing laminate.), it will give you ideas. Search magazines, bookstores, the internet for the style/color/dream kitchen. You can do anything you want. Trust yourself! Remember, this is a process. You're already ahead of most people: you don't have to gut the thing!

Since your walks are white already and you have a lot of natural light coming in, you could paint the cabinets a chocolate color, white granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, stone backsplash, and the floor is fine if you leave it white. Perfect! Hope you like my idea of the chocolate painted cabinets.
