Hi tcotant, it's best to choose the furniture or area rug first for your space before picking a wall color since there are literally endless possibilities and choices for paint. If you are into modern design then most neutral paints would give you the most flexibility. Even just painting the walls a darker shade would change the mood of your living room.

Agree to do the walls last, but because color can make such a dramatic impact, start with something other than white...plan on having to re-paint. Put the whole room together, drapes, pics, hearth accessories, then fine-tune your paint color. It will look different reflecting off your artwork and accessories.
