From what I can see, I would say they work. When you get more things going on your bed, pillows etc. I think they won't stand out as much.

In my opinion, the lights aren't too big - the tables are too small. A large piece of art over the bed would also help your scale issue.

Try bringing the night stands closer to the bed , only leaving and inch or two, and center the lamps on the stands themselves.
They are a bit tall but need to be functional as well.. So they need to be tall enough to read under if you read in bed.

Agree with above posts. If you find the nightstands get too cluttered, you might consider plug-in swing-arm lamps (if installing electrical junction boxes in not an option) to frame the bed.
