Austennut, Glad you're putting some thought into your lighting.

For safety and aesthetic reasons it's important to be able to control the amount and direction of the light. It is best just to cast the light directly onto the objects you're concerned with - the stairs in particular. Post lights can't do that effectively - especially if they are mounted at eye level. Looking into them will make your pupils contract. Then everything outside of that beacon will appear black, which is obviously the opposite of what you want. The point is to conceal the source of the light, but illuminate the intended object.

To cast light onto the surface of the steps use what are called "path lights". With a properly chosen, quality fixture you will only need one on the left near close to the bottom step, and perhaps one on the right in the corner of the raised be where it meets the public sidewalk. Those two will illuminate the bottom three steps and the entire walk just fine.

Then to illuminate the upper steps consider a pin-spot tucked up into the eaves shining straight down. A professional quality shielded fixture (as opposed to what are called "spotlight" bulbs) will keep the light from shining in someones eyes as they walk up the stairs.

A discreet "up-light" on the tree to the right is optional, but would look nice.
