These are Bauhinia trees. A pink variety as opposed to the common white. These are small trees that can be controlled to fit this condition. These trees are about 11' apart. They do need to be pinched back to keep them as a dense shade cover. They are semi deciduous or semi evergreen and lose heir leaves in winter depending on the weather. Other trees that would fit this scenario are Arbutus marina, Metrosideros and Indian series Crepe Myrtle, Lagerstroemia and Chitalpa taskenenis. These are small trees but the same effect for a larger area can be done with the ubiquitous Olive, Cercidium Desert Musem, or the classic pollarde London Plane tree. A less intimate effect can be given with a single well placed California Live Oak tree)
