I'd mix those w more colours - mustard yellow, olives.. Maybe a constellation map to go w your Sputnik lamp. Take a look @ Miro, as well.

With such neutral base any colors would work.

Go shopping for a large bold piece of art for over the sofa - then pull out some of those colors for your pillows. Have fun- be bold!

I LOVE the idea of the constellation map! That is different and fun and totally works in your room.
Also think the idea of all different colors for your pillows would work......just do not over do the pillows or it will look....strange. Maybe find ONE common color for them to make it seem like it was planned and you are not just using ones you found or were given. Maybe even find a few with words or pics on them! NICE ones, of course! LOL

I'd use more of a burnt orange color for the orange accents. I see your wall behind the couch working perfectly for a gallery wall with mostly sepia toned photos interspersed with found objects such as gears and cogs. I would also add a framed round mirror into the mix. I would add the turquoise and additional orange accents with the pillows, drapes and possibly a more colorful area rug. A turquoise lacquer side table would look really nice too. Here are two examples of the art gallery one is more formal than the other.

Unless it's my monitor playing tricks on me, I see green tones in the carpet and on the doors. If this is accurate I suggest the burnt orange paired with a similar green pillow. If you do go with a blue you might consider a more muted shade as dictated by the muted green. For added warmth consider painting just the wall behind the sofa one of the darker colors in your area rug or even the muted blue tone. This will make your interesting floor lamp stand out more. To better balance the room I might suggest that you try your floor lamp at the opposite end of the long sofa unless there is an end table there.
Have fun experimenting, bring lots of different cushions home and return the ones that you least like.

Great start, but I think the current rug is wrong somehow. You have enough brown & linear shapes going on. Something with some texture would be great, but yes, decide on the art first. And I agree that the lamp would be better on the other end of the couch.

Love Gina's work! Get at least one very large painting. Your place needs personal touches to make it homey. If space allows pull the whole arrangement away from the doors.

I agree with Jacqueline that the rug is not the best choice. Return it if you can and swap it for something a little larger and with more color. Maybe something like this? Then you'd have a pallet of colors to use for pillows.

I'm sure the rug is new and hopefully he could use it in another room if he can't swap it. He does need color and interest. Not too sure how tuned into MCM Robert is, other than his floor lamp.

As far as moving the lamp over, do you think an end table would look good in the place of the lamp location?

Here is a really inexpensive idea my daughter and I did, we went to a large carpet place and got a bunch of free sample, laid them out until we had a nice pattern, buy some gorilla tape, flip the pieces over piece by piece, the go crazy with the tape, you will have to use a piece to cut and fill in a few gaps!

Hi Robert! I think if you can paint the rug will be fine as is. I would change it in favor of a more colorful one if color can not be added to the wall.

The rug is working well at reducing high contrast in a monochromatic setting. The room appears well balanced by it, and once artwork is added, it will allow better focus on that piece, rather than itself. I would pull it forward slightly (table needn't be centered) so that a bit more shows, and let accessory colour and texture do the rest, as planned.

The blinds are really distracting from the whole design. If you don't need the privacy, I suggest removing the blind on the small window and leaving it bare. Your lamp will stand out much more and the bare window will break up all the white. Also, replacing the blinds on the doors with individual panels would instantly change the look of your living room. This would also add texture and depth to all the neutral colours. I chose this subtle jacquard pattern to compliment the rug. You could also add more texture and dimension with a faux-fur pouf. These are also from West Elm.

Here are some ideas for accent tables (from West Elm). Make sure you choose one that compliments your coffee table rather than match it perfectly. Any of these would work.

Going with your initial thoughts on color since this is YOUR home and should reflect what you like, think deep orange tones would go well in your room. One large picture over the sofa is a bit dated. The gallery wall is more fitting for a man cave. Find a subject you like (sports, autos, music, whatever) and print pictures off of your computer using photo quality paper. To keep it more masculine, use same size frames with same frame color (or metal). The look in the first picture submitted by Ami Cali would be great! If you happen to live near an Ikea store, they have a lot of inexpensive frames that would work well for this project and you can make a great statement for a small investment. If you don't have Ikea close by, check frames at Wal-mart or Target.

A couple of green plants would go a long way toward adding some color and life to the room. You can pick up nice planters from Ikea, Tuesday Morning, Home Goods or TJ Maxx without breaking the bank. These are also good places to shop for accents (pillows, lamps, coffee table decor and wall decor).

See references to West Elm, and while I have a few items from there, they can be a little pricey if you are trying to decorate a whole room.

I can't really tell what colors are in your rug, but from the picture it looks like something you could still use with the infusion of some orange accents and I also like the pattern. Before deciding to replace it, try out your new pictures and other fillers. If you don't like the rug at that point, then consider replacing it since it wasn't too costly.

I love both with browns and tans and have had both. I am currently using deep cayenne with a deep ocean blue. A little more modern than turquoise - my husband also likes it better as it's a little more masculine.

I actually like the one you currently have but you mentioned wanting to bring in some colour so I prefer the first one. It suits the style you're going for and the browns tie in with your couches.

Great neutral palette! So, you can change your "look" rather inexpensively.
If this were my house, Shopping for artwork is troublesome, for I would want something "different." Framed fabric is easy to do and easily changed- you can staple it like an art canvass or replace a mirror in a frame. Then choose solid accent pillows. Or a collage if prints or downloaded photos

Man Cave...it's perfect! Just need a statement piece of art!
