This was a good looking piece of furniture to begin with so either way works.

I think some new hardware would take it over the top.

I just did the same thing to my nightstands, but went cream instead of black. I did buy some very fun knobs at Anthropologie to complete the change. Yours looks great but would look even better with great new pulls - maybe something very modern and unexpected.
