I am doing the very same with my stairs! I love the strip carpet!

Another one I liked was Crucial Trading but it's quite a bit more expensive. I have been thinking of putting down a striped carpet for years which is why I thought it might be a bit passé now. I am using the same loop carpet in our lounge but in 'Barley' colour (hope it doesn't look too casual as i want it to look sophisticated yet modern)....and I'm also considering carpet (darker colour, same loop wool) in lower hall but with muddy shoes sometimes coming in I'm not sure, might just leave pine boards.

I vote yes on the striped carpet for your stairs. It will be stunning!

Lazandjohn, It all sounds good to me. I don't think you have to worry about the lounge room looking too casual. Stripes are very flexible - it will also depend on how you furnish and accessorize the room. One suggestion for the muddy boots area - I have an indoor/outdoor rug at my entranceway (with a rug pad underneath). I am so happy with it - clean up is no problem as there are no fibres for dirt and mud to get stuck in. Everything just stays on the surface waiting to be vacuumed up. You can also wash these rugs off with a garden hose, which I've never had to do, but good to know anyway! They come in beautiful patterns also. Mine is a sisal look from Crate and Barrel. Can't say enough about them!

Like the stripe

I think the stripe is a great idea, but your comment on it not being a runner has me concerned. The stripe would not upholster well wrapping on the ends going over the right side of the stair. If it will be contained within the metal spindles, you're fine. The other big test of stair carpet is how it's going to look wrapped on the front nose of the tread. If it's going to be tight as it rolls down to the next tread, then you have to see if the pattern "smiles". Basically you're looking to see how much the loops are spread from each other. If you can see the backing, it is not a good choice.
