Builders just do not think things out very clearly when they are putting in things like this.

Best bet is to get something you will not have to touch and is easy to dust. Is it hard getting to the space?

No, not really. It's a ladder-and-a-husband job ;-) I took this photo from my second floor landing. The staircase is just off to my left... goes down 7 steps, hits a landing, and then turns to the right and goes down 7 more steps right "under" this photo. On the landing there is a HUGE blank wall where I would like to put a large piece of art. The two spaces don't have to be super matchy matchy, but I will draw colors from one space to help design the other since they're close together. I was hoping that an eclectic style would open me up to a lot of ideas, but it really isn't. The area clearly isn't particularly functional - unless I use boxes or something to store things... Frustrating! Too many choices is almost as bad as not enough.

I have the same space/problem (minus the skinny ledge under the window)! It's driving me crazy. I decided to ignore and not decorate. I thought this through and the last thing I want is to draw attention to this wacky space which decorating would do.

If you really must decorate, I don't mind the vintage suitcase idea but seems a bit contrived.
