Help! Split-entry home needs extreme facelift and possible expansion

We recently purchased a 1965 split-entry bi-level with zero curb appeal. We need to 'fix' the front and would like to enter the house on the upper level, doing away with the split stair entry. Currently the lower level left to right front to back is a 'rec' room with fireplace, stairs with mechanicals/1/2 bath behind, then closed-in original 2 car garage. Uppers level is 2 bedrooms, stairs with full bath behind, living room with kitchen and eating area behind. Have considered 'digging out' about 3 1/2 feet of the lower level since the house sits up on a rise in the front. Would add space for a master suite, or convert current 2 bedrooms to master and add 2 bedrooms and full bath, particularly if we could connect to the 2 car detached garage to the right of the house. OH! And since my husband lost his job the same week we bought the house, we would like to do this all quickly and at a reasonable price! YIKES! Thanks for any and all ideas. Tracey
