I think you have the makings of a lovely room. Your color scheme is great with the greens and blues. But you are right about too many "bits and bobs" (love that expression!). How about a blue and green area rug and a coffee table to pull things toward the center? And maybe reduce the number of tables/cabinets in the room? Also, the art pieces over the couch may be too small and too far apart from each other to make a statement. This is just my uneducated opinion. Others will be able to provide more specific

You have a lot of furn. Like you are trying to fill wall space. Don't do that. Take away all you said above, plus wood chest. Your sofa loks modern,but wood back chair does not. Do not hang small items on big walls. Your scones are too country for room. And too small. Replace with longer 2 ft and brushed nickel. Chairs should sit across from each other, closer to sofas. Do a bigger 36" art over sofa. Contemporary and use the green from sofa, in art and accessories. You wont need lamps, with scones or maybe just one on end table. By sofa. Remove hutch n wall by door. Add big palms in ceramic pots in lime green Or turquoise. Like your white cabinet. What is plastic above it? Add tall 3 pots to one end in your accent colors. In bare corners add plants.

Remove area rug.

Put pillows in a green print, to mix and add all to end only.

Panels on window, should go to wall end. and floors yr are too short.

Loving these ideas so far, thank you, how good is Houzz?! Must admit, I had to look up what a 'hutch' and a 'scone' is (in the UK a hutch is where rabbits live and a scone is a cake!) so that threw me initially! Should the scones be 2 ft vertical or horizontal? PS I've attached a photo of the matching white cabinet up on the wall so you can see what it is.

I too think you have very nice furniture and i think you can make a "new room" with what you have just by moving things around a bit. I used to have a room like this and a designer showed me how to add grandeur and warmth with a long room - you can trick the eye. Let's say the couch is now on the "right wall" and the TV is now on the "left wall".

I would slant the couch at an angle just so that each back end is almost touching the right wall and other side is almost touching the window just past the open curtain - this way when you are sitting on it you will be facing the doorway from across the room (at a angle). behind the couch, have your lamp table with the lamp behind the couch in the corner with the lamp facing out toward the couch - put the plant on that lamp table alongside and slightly behind the lamp (so you can see it when entering the room behind the couch for added effect/warmth) - angle the lamp table to match angle of the couch. Slant the red rug so it is running in front of the couch at an angle as well directly in front of it (yes at an angle as well!). Place the coffee table in front of the couch (in the middle of it, enough room for your feet in front of the couch). Take the lovely wooden smaller cabinet and place that where you now have your high dish china cabinet (put the three smaller pictures you have and hang above cabinet. Take the china cabinet and move that to where the piano is. Leave the TV cabinet where it is. Put the other white cabinet across from it along the right wall so it almost acts like a side table to the couch. Hang your red flower picture above that other white cabinet. Place the orchid on the edge of that cabinet so that it picks up the flower picture as a red flower theme. Place the chairs at angles so that they are across from the couch, I would recommend that the leather chair be closer to your right wall (angled) and so your can use the white cabinet for placing your drink, etc, and that the other chair with foot cushion be on the left side angled and facing the window and the couch. You can then angle the piano on the other side (left wall), slightly in front of window and touching left wall... if you have enough room... just a few thoughts! Good luck!

Michtam- first off- the person is referring to a "sconce" not a scone. It is the light that is mounted on the wall as opposed to hanging from the ceiling. The "hutch" is another name for your antique "secretary" desk, which is really beautiful. Your TV cabinet is interesting- the lower part and what does the other part above it do? is it lighting? I love your leather chair (don't get rid of it unless it is in really bad shape- doesn't look that way) and the gray one too. I would switch their places and put the leather one 90 degrees to the couch end so it is facing out the big window. I love the mix of things you have and I think it could be all pulled together quite well. the gray chair could have a "longer space" to use the ottoman. You don't need to have it re-covered for color. Add a toss pillow or throw on it for color. It looks as thought the walls and carpeting are same color- any chance of painting some color on the walls? Your side lamps are a little wimpy or too small in scale. have fun.

P.S. I do not think your red rug will work color wise or the fact that it will be moving around all the time on top of carpet.

Great ideas, thank you. I hadn't thought of angling the sofa because there's a door leading out to the balcony and didn't want to block it but I think you're right, it'll look so much better. Going to have fun moving this furniture around - will wait until tomorrow to do that, don't want to wake up the neighbours! The wall-hung cabinet on the 'left' wall contains DVDs and CDs. The 'country' wall-lights are being replaced by these 'cos I like subtle lighting in a lounge but what do you reckon? Too small again? What about the table lamps? What style do you think I should have? (Apologies for the 20,000 questions!)

PS I did have a white dining table where the piano is but I've stuck it under the sofa to fit the piano in which arrived back from a friend's today. Here's an old photo - you can just see the table in the corner on the left. Should I leave it dismantled and use it when I need it or stick it back in again?!

I think just a few things will spruce up the place. I'd suggest a pretty striped rug and a modern coffee table. A table that relates to the wood tones of the sofa and chair/ottoman. I'd switch out some pieces and move the secretary to the right of the tv. I'd move the lamp from the tv console to the left of the sofa. Oh...lower the art above the sofa to only 8" above the sofa and only 3 inches apart. It may sound weird, but it will look better. The curtains are a bit muted for your style..a pretty teal, or apple green in a fun graphic pattern would be nice as well. The rug...the one on the far right in photo below..

BTW...do you own or rent? Those wall light fixtures (sconces) are a nice feature in the space but agree they are a bit too traditional. I'd swap out for something really modern looking to really accentuate the feature.

I'm not loving your new wall light. It's not stylish enough for you! How about just spray painting the ones you have a pretty color? (or even black or a medium gray) Then, use a light bulb that looks like a chandelier bulb? Clear bulb.

Your "bits and bobs" decor is missing focus. I hate to put that burden on TV and you have no FP, so that leaves the view and balcony as your focal point. The star of your show is the MCM style sofa and the colors in your drapes are working very well with that. As for the sconces, I'd delete them from the equation entirely and get some classic MCM floor and table lamps. Agree on angling the sofa but to face the view, not the interior of the space. Angle it at a 45 with one arm near the radiator. If the new digital piano is going to be a baby grand style, I'd place it the left corner by the window and move the TV further left on the credenza. If an upright, then put it behind the angled sofa and move the secretary to the former piano wall where it won't be so crowded. I'm not crazy about it but does provide the only visual break in the horizontal line being drawn around the room by the lower pieces of furniture. The long white shelf it not providing that either but just adds to the linearity. I'd remove it and hang your tall piece of art to the right of the TV, between it and the piano. If you like mid-century style, begin to shop with an eye to adding more of it to your space.

We've moved the furniture around to fit the first layout suggestion. What do you think? (Just concentrating on the sofa placement at the moment because everything else involves heavy labour!) Thank you!

You are sooo getting there!!! I love the coffee table Darzy picked out... trust me, I know it is crazy but try the gorgeous persian rug you have and put that in front of the couch at an angle (the couch feet can go on it a bit so that it is just slightly under the couch)... then find a coffee table that is rectangular (like Darzy's) and put that in front of the couch... the rug should be angled to match the couch angle as should the coffee table. You can then add a nice bowl or centerpiece for the coffee table, or a nice candle set... you will see... it will really jazz it up and kick it up a notch... am going to try to find that old pic of my condo to show what it does for the room...

Remove Xmas lights. Add tall 3 pots in your colors to top. On one end only. Scones, to funny about words in different country. I only think I'm talking to Americans. But to know this a international site, is very nice. Get 2 feet, not sure what is in your system? Hang Vertically. I would like to see 2 chairs together in a print . More modern. Ikea ( I think you have? )Carries some nice stuff now.

Here are some new variations on sofa placement - the last photo is how it was originally. I'd be grateful for your opinions and apologies again for the double thread! Blame computer illiteracy on my part!

Of course, I prefer the one with the sofa angled to enjoy the view and balcony. There are other reasons than esthetic. With a west window, sun fade will be an issue for fabrics. This angle away from the window saves your sofa, and leaves a great spot for the new piano beside the window so light can come over the pianists shoulders. A baby grand style would be lovely there with the wood file cabinet moved, perhaps to the wall where you showed the dining set earlier. Can you take a pic from the window looking back into the space?

I hadn't thought of the sun-fade aspect. That's a really good point. I must admit, it is nice for us to look out of the window rather than have our backs to it. Here's the shot you asked for looking back into the space. That's as far back as I could get, I'm afraid as the room isn't very large. 17' (5.18) x 14'10 (4.52).

That will be very nice once the piano is gone and the secretary stands in its place. If the 3 pix spread out on the wall are a coordinated group, try them in the secretary's place stacked vertically. To choose layout, prop them against the wall and squint your eyes to determine the most saturated or dark one. Put that one on the bottom of the stack and the lightest one on top. Leave the width of 1- frames between them. Would you be interested in styling the bookshelves in the hallway?
